Applying for Florida food stamps? Have fun. I had to help my mother and grandmother renew their food benefits (mom is 61 and disabled and grandmother is 86 and retired with no money) in November. My grandmother received food benefits from Florida Department of Children & Families and my mother received food benefits from some program called SUNCAP. They both have not had any issues for around two years until I had to simply renew my grandmother’s application in November.
Part of the application (called ACCESS- http://www.myflorida.com/accessflorida) says to indicate all the family members in the household and if they receive benefits. My mother never had to renew SUNCAP, which is an emergency fund for people without Social Security benefits (i.e. people who did not accumulate enough SS points in their working life). So I put my mother down because ACCESS says that we have to tell the truth.
Not only was my grandmother rejected, but the government took SUNCAP away from my mother, and they put the application payee under my mother’s name.
They did not respond back to e-mail, letters, or phone calls. My family had to go down (2-3 buses) and they were told that my mother is disqualified from SUNCAP but my grandmother should have received benefits every month since November and that it would be “fixed” and she would have a food stamp balance on Feb.7.
Well, Feb. 7 passed and there was no balance, and also no back money for the three months she got screwed.
They went down AGAIN, and they were told that the application has to be filed online again, this time with no mention of my mother’s name (even though she’s not on SUNCAP anymore).
It makes no sense- how are two people supposed to eat with half of the already low food stamps benefits? I would think that the proper way would be for my grandmother to file for her family of 2 people.
By the way, my family has problems using ACCESS online because it’s really not user friendly for senior citizens with limited computer experience, yet every time they try to get help downtown, they are told to do everything online.
If they made the trip and actually spoke to a human, a human being should have made sure my grandmother received the back months and they should have edited the digital application and made things right for them going forward.
