Parking Lot Etiquette: Taking Too Long to Pull Out

Why do people take so long to pull out?

There’s always a lot of talk about people violating parking lot etiquette by taking up two spaces, hitting your car with their shopping cart, speeding, not looking in the car mirror before pulling out, etc., but my pet peeve is something original. I hate it when people in my neighborhood get into their cars, turn on the engine, and…just sit their for a couple of minutes. Then, only when I am walking near their car (usually with my dog), they start to pull out. WTF?

Let me explain this better so you get a better picture of what I am talking about: let’s use a morning example when everyone is going to work. I’ll be walking my dog in my community and I’ll see someone leave their house in a rush. They will open their car door, turn the keys in the engine…and just sit there…doing something for 30 seconds to 3 minutes…before pulling out. (Sometimes they are weird people that just sit in their car for 10 minutes, and then pull out when I approach.) By then I have already walked close to their car. They see me in their mirror and only then decide to pull out of their parking spot. It’s like I’m their daddy or someone telling them to get out of bed.

By the time I am close to their vehicle, I don’t know where to stand because they usually pull out wide, and start turning right in our direction. And then, of course, they are back in their rush mode, and I’m a pedestrian who is slowing them down. I just don’t see this happening in the morning, I see it at various times at malls, supermarkets, and other places.

So..what are people doing in their cars for so long before they freakin’ pull out? Here are my guesses:

- Fixing their makeup
- Talking on their cell phone
- Blowing cold air conditioner to cool off the car
- Picking their nose.
- Obviously if kids are involved, it may take 5-10 minutes to pull out because they are like barbarians and need to be strapped down for your own safety. Should have been done BEFORE turning on the ignition, though
- Looking for something in the pocketbook
- Heating up the car
- Getting the right radio station or CD
- Organizing papers
- Adjusting their car seats and mirrors because they share their car
- Podcasting
- Something perverted

Of course, my whacked out theory is that people are still in 1965-mode and think that you have to “warm up the engine” and hit the fuel while in park so your car will run.

And when they see me walking, it’s like they get embarrassed for taking so long to pull out, and they’re like “Alright, time to pull out, but that guy was watching me take so long, so lemme come close to running him over.”

Maybe one day I should just stand right at their driver’s window with my dog and stare at them to see what they are doing sitting in their car that they had just started.

By the way, if you think this parking phenomena is a figment of my imagination, think about this DailySkew post the next time you are in your car waiting for someone to pull out of a spot you want. They put the keys in their ignition…and…how long does it take for them to pull out?

Why Are People Typing “Pac-Man” in Google if it’s on the HOMEPAGE

Insert Coin, ya Rube!

So the hottest Google trend right now is PAC-MAN. The first thing I thought of, was how it couldn’t be Pac-Man the video game since it’s so old. Then I thought maybe it was Manny Pacman Pacquiao the boxer. PacMan Jones came to mind. So sure enough, I go to google’s homepage and see a playable Pac-Man game on Google’ logo. I played it for 3 minutes before a ghost ate me. Then I went back to work.

Some random thoughts about Google Pac-Man:

Google celebrated Pac-Man’s 30th Anniversary or whatever the number of years is.
It’s so pathetic that news companies report stories about Google’s logo.
Is there an easter egg in Google’s Pac-Man that takes a shot at Apple? Who cares? Oh, geeks care, that’s right.
So..lemme get this straight…Joe Watercooler says you can play Pac-Man on Google.com, yet people still have to type PAC-MAN in google to find it, right? Okay….Yeah, I know many people also typed Pac-Man to figure out why the heck Google made it their logo, too.
So…uhm…is Pac-Man public domain, did Namco pay for this ADVERTISEMENT, or is Google going communist again?
Glad Google has time to do all of this, I mean there I see 1,252,464 pending questions in there help forums.

Navy Swastika Building

So…what’s worse a Navy barracks built in 1967 shaped in the form of a swastika or the fact that the Navy will spend $600,000 to change it? Personally in this economy, I would say spending $600,000 to be politically correct is a but much. Or many Uncle Sam thought that they would get sued by the Anti-Defamation League, and the legal fees would come close to $600,000 anyway. However, the Navy denied they were motivated out of fear of being sued.

So thanks to Google Earth, satellite pictures are now offending people and more money is being spent that never trickles down to ME, the common blogger, or YOU the average internet surfer just trying to put food on the freakin’ table.

According to Navy records, it was only until groundbreaking had begun did they realize how it would look. Internet conspiracy theorists have different theories of course, fueled by the Google Earth images that fell into the hands of Chicken Littles “The Sky is Falling!”

So for the record I believe it is a waste of money to change it. As for the responsibility of the Navy back in 1967- I have no idea what was going on then, or why they didn’t notice the blueprints, unless the original blue-print have more buildings in it.

This is another example of the use of Google Earth causing problems in “real life”. That being said, do you mean to tell me no one ever flew over the Navy barracks since 1967? Do you mean to tell me no one noticed this before just by walking around it or viewing it from a building? LaME….

Coming this summer: PREDATORS MOVIE

Because you DEMANDED IT!

Last time I saw DailySkew co-founder Tony Vahl in the flesh I went on a rant about how Hollywood is so unoriginal with 2010 movies like The A-Team, Clash of the Titans, Nightmare on Elm Street. I listed some remakes that bomb and how public domain characters get slapped together for movies, like Sherlock Holmes and Robin Hood. Go back in recent history and it gets worse- even if the quality of the movie was good I have to ask WHY? ™: The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Avengers, Planet of the Apes, Psycho, Godzilla 1998, The Invasion, King Kong, and many others. No original ideas. I’ll take sequels over remakes any day of the week.

At least the Star Trek Movie wasn’t a true reboot, and respected the old universe. Our old friend Juan Arasa once said there is no such thing as new ideas, so I may be alone in ripping this one, but here comes…PREDATORS. Is it a remake of Predator? Is it a sequel? Is it a reboot? I don’t care anymore. The first Predator sucked, and here we have the same story minus Arnold and Jesse Ventura. Hey it’s an updated B-Movie but with 2010 directing and special effects. Pass. Anyway check out the PREDATORS TRAILER (try not to laugh…or fall asleep):

As the late Michael Crichton had demonstrated: being Green is a business. And even today with the Global Warming Hoax revealed, legislation, tax benefits, and corporate “initiatives” have already gone into motion and will continue to dominate our lives.

We live in a world where THEY created terms like “carbon footprints” and “carbon neutral”. THEY make you feel guilty for using a computer or burping. Meanwhile THEY practice “do as I say, not as I do”.

At first I imagine corrupt multi-billion dollar corporations hated the Green movement because of the regulations and costs, but thanks to tax breaks and the benefits of saying “Our company is carbon neutral” or “Our company is green”, even the most devious corporations get defended by THEM for complying with carbon neutral protocols. “Yeah sure Company X may have exploited child labor in India and defrauded shareholders, but they have a low carbon footprint.”

We’ve already seen government bids incorporating Green standards. The special interest groups have won, even with the Global Warming Hoax, because the machine had already started.

Now, me, I’m a tree-huger and vegetarian, but I never agreed with the stats behind global warming or the world governments getting involved to force Green.

Generation Y and Generation Z are taught about carbon neutrality and global warming as an accepted fact in school.

With the clay feet of golf icon Tiger Woods finally showing, I think it’s time for me to deconstruct golf as a sport and a money-maker. The thing that set me off this morning was the news that Tiger Woods has canceled his interviews with police (FHP- Florida Highway Patrol) who want to investigate the 911 call, car accident, and scratches on his face. Must be wonderful to be so rich and famous that you can “cancel police interviews” and just post cryptic messages from your website. (This confirms that Tiger Woods is indeed an Enneagram Type 9).

I mean, can you imagine Tony Vahl “canceling police interviews” if his wife (God forbid) beat him up at 3:00AM due to allegations of cheating, scratched his face, and then Vahl tried to escape in his car but collided with a fire hydrant, and was knocked out? Then when the FHP want to interview him, he CANCELS three times, and then posts his side of the story on Dailyskew.com/blog.html?

Dang.

Anyway….why do golfers make so much money (or…why are golfers so rich)?

First, let me defend them for being rich bastards-

It takes a lot of skill to be a pro golfer
You have to win to get paid
You have to pay for travel expenses
Most pro golfers just break even in the first few years and earn around $100,000
They were born rich. As the old saying goes, the most common way to make money is inheritances.

(This golf rant is not targeted towards my buddies that like to test their mettle on a local golf course every now and then, and enjoy a new challenge, the spirit of playing, and the fresh air.)

One of the reasons why golf is not really a “sport” in my book is because the number of fans is dwarfed when compared to football, baseball, basketball, NASCAR, and even pro wrestling (granted, not a sport, but still an athletic performance). I’m basing this on stats: TV ratings, attendance, merchandise, special events, website traffic, etc.

The big joke to me is that most golf fans are simply amateur golfers- usually business men or retired business men who have nothing else to do, but still have the competitive drive. This has been going on since the 1950′s, when rich white men wanted to become the next Arnold Palmer. Athletes from other sports like to golf after they retire, and realize how hard it is, so they look up to pro golfers. But it’s the only sport out-of-shape senior citizens can play, unless you include shuffleboard, dominoes, poker, checkers, and chess in the discussion (and why not?) Bowling is too tough for the guys I see on golf courses.

In other words, I’m trying to say that most true pro golf fans are consumers of golf products, and frankly most come from the upper middle or high class, and are mostly white. Therefore, the entire sport is based on advertisers and sponsors selling products to their target audience- arguably the best target audience in terms of spending money. Like many industries, it’s self-perpetuating.

Anyone inside internet marketing knows that the “golf niche” is a money maker, and it is extremely competitive, almost on par with diet pills. Golf fans will pay for golf instruction and golf equipment, and they have the money to burn on these fantasies of winning the senior citizen crown of their local city.

But advertisers sell more than golf-related products. Pro golfers sign endorsement contracts with ExxonMobil, Stanford Financial, Barclays, GM, real estate, clothing, wine, energy, etc. These companies pay for the branding. Stats show that Tiger Woods old GM contract increased sales of their SUVs in Asian countries. It’s become a status symbol for both the golfer and the corporation.

It obviously must be working within the target audience, otherwise companies wouldn’t invest $24 million in “El Nino” Sergio Garcia. However, to an outsider such as myself, I just have to shrug it off because golf seems to be overrated to me. Basketball remains the cheapest and most popular “pick up game” for American youths. Golf is the opposite- it remains the “Gentleman’s Game” and you need money to play.

Golf is a culture now: it is the most accepted way business men communicate and compete with each other. If you don’t know how to play golf and you are trying to close a business deal, you may be out of luck. It’s like not speaking Spanish in Miami. Golf is also part of the tourism industry, as rich men will travel far and wide to indulge in an overpriced golf course. Of course, it goes hand in hand with sexual tourism. Golf is an accepted way to raise money for charity as well. It also is the preferred choice of leisure all of our U.S. presidents.

New Clash of the Titans Trailer 2010

Did you hear about the Clash of the Titans remake in 2010? Oh, you didn’t know? Well, the Clash of the Titans CGI looks fantastic, and I see a few familiar actors in there. Just based on the trailer, the Clash of the Titans remake looks pretty cool. So why can you detect my underwhelming excitement?

Could it be…that there was no reason to have a Clash of the Titans remake? Yeah, that could be it. Here’s another one: is the plot going to be the same? It looks so based on the trailer. So all we will have is enhanced graphics, better music, and maybe some sex.

Am I being jaded? How long before Clash of the Titans 2010 will be streaming in the Netflix Instant Browse section?

Remake, remake, remake. Because you demanded it. You demanded a King Kong vs Godzilla remake, so you’re going to get it.

What, a new generation must experience Clash of the Titans in full CGI HD? They can’t enjoy the 1981 version? Or is that a myth: perhaps children and young adults actually watch and enjoy movies and TV shows pre-1998?

By the way, what’s the difference between watching the 1981 Clash of the Titans on DVD or TBS vs. going to the movie theater in 2010? Why must be spend $10 per person to experience the same story, but with “updates”? It’s the whole Madden 2010 syndrome. Newer = better in our world.

Why are we as a society so attracted to the new, shiny, gold jewelery that someone is dangling in front of us like a pendulum? Why do we drool and say “that’s awesome” when we see CGI. Twenty years from now this “cutting edge CGI” will look like those Styrofoam rocks in Star Trek: The Original Series. Okay, so I’m exaggerating, but I’m just sayin’. WHY ™?

Okay, it’s cool. But was it necessary to create a Clash of the Titans remake? If you ever watched the original (which I suggest you do if you haven’t) did you ever say, “Man, I wish they could remake that movie.” Can we get Chris Rock to play Calibos?

Titans. Will. Clash. Wow…sounds like a WCW pro wrestling pay-per-view from 1990: Sting vs Ric Flair, this time in a CAGE.

Hollywood marketing and ideas board room meeting (various voices):

“Any new ideas?”

“Well, I was with my girlfriend last night, going through the channels, and I saw this old movie- Clash of the Titans. I don’t know it must have been made in the 1960′s or something. But it was pretty cool. I was thinking- with the success of 300 and Beowulf, we should do a Clash of the Titans remake.”

“Sounds great!”

“Yes, let’s get May and Manfredi on the phone and see if they can come up with a screenplay!”

“Liam Neeson would be a great Burgess Meredith!”

“Who?”

“Nah, cast Neeson as Zeus.”

“Sam Worthington should be the lead.”

“Perseus?”

“Who?”

“Perseus- the hero!”

“Get Worthington’s agent on the phone.”

“Worthington was excellent in Terminator Salvation.”

“I heard he’s doing the voice in Avatar.”

“Sign him up!”

Why Is Taking Multiple Anti-Depressants At Once Common?

Why is taking multiple anti-depressants at once common? When did the United States jump the shark with this crap? I spent the entire day and night with someone whom I care about deeply. Unbeknown to me, she did not eat much and was having a nervous breakdown for the last two days before she was taken to the emergency room this morning. She finally called me today at 10:30AM at work and told me what happened. I picked her up when she called back and I stayed over her house until 8:00PM after making sure she would be OK tonight.

It turns out that she was having depression and anxiety issues over many different things and a psychiatrist had prescribed her three or four separate anti-depressant medications plus sleeping pills. She was already on pain-killers because she has advanced arthritis (mixed connective tissue disorder) and back pain.

This is the problem with mental health medicine today: there is no therapy, no method to change your life and try to create a happy atmosphere. It’s a pill factory. For the record, she’s not the only one I know that this has happened to; I currently know at least 5 people that are on multiple anti-depressants at once. Heck, I thought Wellbutrin would be enough. But now psychiatrists are prescribing Wellbutrin + Zoloft + Paxil + Ambien? 15 years ago people just took Prozac. When I was a kid adults would take Valium for everything…

This is a symptom of our society where kids get diagnosed with ADD for being…kids, depressed people get drugged up with no regard for body chemistry and side-effects, and everyone is a freakin’ hypochondriac. How about going deep to the root of the problem of depression and anxiety?

President Obama’s people are still spinning that they created hundreds of thousands of jobs, but local newspapers around the country debunked his stats and showed examples of funny accounting. Looks like the stimulus plan was a failure as the unemployment rate rises to 10.2%.
Taylor Swift…something…very important…or not. Taylor Swift.
Twilight: New Moon…coming to a theater near you soon. The two lead actors are probably gay, but none of their millions of teenage girl fans know it. Oh, and A-Rod partied with one in Miami last night (probably to get those girls).
Sarah Palin is selling her book on Oprah.
I saw a GREAT John Rich country music video featuring Kris Kristofferson and Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) called Shuttin’ Detroit Down. Check that one out when you get the chance.
Some blonde chick walked off Larry King; I think she was that Miss Universe runner-up, I don’t know anymore, all these blonde white girls look alike.

Fort Hood…Islam…Terror Websites….Jihad…
Reality TV shows…everywhere.
Disney Channel, ABC Family, Nickelodeon: Miley Cyrus is truly the ultimate symbol of Young Teen TV. And we think the Japanese are sick with their pre-teen anime?
TMZ is a sick TV show/Website…the paparazzi have taken over and are more influential than ever, and we as fans support them. What a world we live in…Godzilla, anyone? Anyone?

No wonder people have to take multiple anti-depressants at once. TV sucks ass. Seriously.

Speeding in a school zone

Let’s face it- before we were drivers, the term “school zone” had a completely different definition than it does now. Now, it’s a pain for many drivers, and the penality for disobeying is stiff. So my pet peeve is when someone is tailgaiting me down here in South Florida even with the flashing yellow traffic signals demanding that we travel 15MPH.

Sometimes I fantasize about a motor cop pulling this slob over, but that has never happened yet.

Other times I fantasize about getting out of the car and explaining to him about the school zone speed limit.

There are some days when everyone puts peer pressure on me to go over 15MPH- it’s like everyone is ignoring the school zone flashing light.

Granted there are some cases where it is hard to know if you are even in a school zone if you don’t see the flashing light or sign (like if you turned onto the street), but it seems like everyone plays “follow the leader” even with the yellow flashing traffic signal.

Lazy Man Ethics (LME) says to always follow the leader and “go with the flow”. I hate LME.

It is especially frustrating when an Enneagram Type 8 or Enneagram Type 7 “knows” it’s teacher’s planning day at a certain middle school and “knows” that the cops won’t enforce the law even if the yellow light is flashing. Yeah, okay, I’m sure a judge is going to be OK with that.
