BEP Philippines: The following is a Black Eyed Peas Manila Concert Review from a DailySkew correspondent whose name must remain anonymous due to the reporter being a well known name in the Philippines, and he or she doesn’t want any problems:
i reread your BEP boom boom pow review. i pretty much agree with what you wrote. ,i am just commenting on how the BEP perform live.the bad:out door venue, so acoustics are not going to be the best and their props and stunts are limited (no descending from the roof or riding a motorcycle across a catwalk above the crowd)weak opening act: all girl group called (blush). they are eye candy, but their performance live is weak.after blush was done, it was a good 30 minutes before BEP finally came on stage. no announcements, filler music, nothing.the good: fergie was very impressive vocally. strong, powerful, yet feminine voice. she can sing and also break it down like a white gangsta rappa barbie. will is the creative force with the rhythm, catchy hooks and beats.he relies heavily on autotune and is not much of a lyrical rapper genius like tupac, but then again, he doesnt have to be. his forte is creating a nice tune to get people up to dance.i am a bad dancer and shy, but the hooks are so good, that i didnt care and did my shuffle and spongebob dance.apl.de.ap is what i think of a perfect 3rd guy. he can never be a leader of a group nor have a successful solo career. but he knows his role in the band, accepts it and carries out his role well. rapping skills are ok and he still break dances on the stage at age 36. his pants were ripped on stage while he was break dancing. but he still went on dancing, clutching his pants, so they wouldnt fall down. later on, he changed pants. apl sang 3 emotional filipino songs, the quality was average at best.nevertheless, he got much love from the crowd as it was his homecoming and he announced big charity works for kids in the PI. what he does have working for him, is charm, charisma, a good positive vibe and is just a good guy you want to root for.i did not know much about taboo. the 4th man. he is a hard core east LA rapper. his freestyle rap was more of a tough guy, angry, gangsta rap style.decent rapper, but no way will he have success going solo. the peas work as a group, because like the Rock said, know your role.will i am is the beat maker, fergie provides the sex appeal and strong and sensuous vocals. they are what makes the BEP go. the other 2 guys just fill their backup roles well.as usual, eye catching costumes and for boom boom pow, they had light up costumes. a visual feast. will also had a giant robot costume (could be a villain robot in iron man 3) and freestyle dj’d from a hydraulic mini dj booth. the crowd loved it. during the freestyle portions, i felt like i was in club rave from 1996. in general, the sound system was a bit too heavy on the bass, which at times drowned out the treble.in summary, the crowd ate it up, and it was nice to see BEP because this may be their last performance in manila.and happy for apl, who came from hardship in the PI and nystagmus (eye problem) to being a multi millionaire and using some of his money for poor kids here. much respect to him.all members of the band are 36 years old, so they cant keep this up much longer. and they all want to take a break from being a group and try out their solo careers. i give it 4 out of 5 stars. to me BEP is similar to why “fast and the furious” movies are successful. just check your brain at the door and bring in your heart and you will have a great time.the peas, like fast and furious, are not meant to be deep, complex, lyrical geniuses. but if you accept them for what they are- a simple, booty shakin, good beats, catchy hooks, forget your problems for 1 night, feel good band, then the ticket price will be well worth it. with that being said, they are performing their FINAL show for many years to come at dolphins stadium in miami on 11/23/11.tickets start at $25-$30. they will also have better opening act, flo rida, marc anthony, sean kingston, etc.
