One central theme of best-selling DC Comics writer Geoff Johns’ Green Lantern run is the “emotional spectrum”. For some close-minded comic book message board mutants, all they can see is a retcon or a lame excuse to have different colored power rings. However, based on Green Lantern sales, the majority of fans love the concept. I can’t speak for them, however, but I can tell you the reason why I love the emotional spectrum- it is a theory of knowledge that attempts to explain the motivations of living things, and ties into the origin of the universe. When I first read about the emotional spectrum, I found it similar to the Enneagram Personality Types, the Dream Seeker Universe concept of Icons and the Animalgram, Christian myths, and in some cases Buddhism.
The emotional spectrum can be defined as the energies created by the emotions of sentient life, visible as different wavelengths of light: ROY G BIV. It totally ties into the origin of life in the DC Universe. Well, here you go folks, I’m going to break down this awesome concept for you:
In the beginning…well it’s kinda hard to pinpoint THE beginning since the multiverse expands and contract…but in the beginning of this universe, there was BLACK..the void…nothingness. And then the White Light trespassed into this darkness. This light is The Entity, for all intents and purposes, it is the Creator or The Force that binds all life, energy, and matter. The Black is symbolized by Nekron, ruler of the dead.
Over time, part of the White had the WILL to become alive. This willpower spark created (or was) the first single-celled organism- which forced itself to move by its own accord. This is the color GREEN, and its emotional entity elemental is ION, which is based on a paramecium. Ion is the living embodiment of willpower, and was harnessed by the Guardians of the Universe to create the Green Lantern Corps. Green is also the balance of all the colors in the emotional spectrum (Roy G Biv)
Eventually with the progress of evolution, creatures started to leave the water and took to land and air. During this time, living things had to develop defense mechanisms and “fight or flight” responses to avoid being eaten. FEAR is born from the creatures that preyed upon the weak. The horrible creature Parallax is the embodiment of fear, which is based on an insect. Its color is YELLOW, originally “the necessary impurity in the Green Lantern ring”- because Parallax was trapped in the Central Power Battery. Sinestro used it to empower the yellow Sinestro Corps.
Creatures learned how to LOVE, and this sparked the VIOLET Light, and its Emotional Entity is called The Predator. The Zamarons harnessed this power, and created the Star Sapphires to spread their (obsessive and possessive) love. At the far end of the emotional spectrum, those who harness the power of love can be overwhelmed by it. Carol Ferris, Hal Jordan’s former girlfriend, is Star Sapphire again. The Predator’s relationship with the Zamarons hasn’t been fully revealed by Geoff Johns yet, although he borrowed The Predator from Steve Englehart’s classic Green Lantern stories from the 1980′s.
When a creature ate what it did not need, AVARICE was created. Avarice (greed) is ORANGE Light, and the first creature to spread the orange spark was a serpent. This serpent emotional entity (implied that its the serpent from the Garden of Eden) resides in an orange battery held by the last keeper of the Orange Light, Larfleeze (Agent Orange). Larfleeze used it to created the Orange Lanterns, which is an army of creatures his orange light took over and consumed. Exposure to the orange light consumes living things, and drains them. During BLACKEST NIGHT, Lex Luthor was consumed by avarice.
The origin of RAGE comes from murder (the Cain and Abel story). Its color, of course, is RED, the color of blood, war, and anger. Atrocitus (killer of Abir Sur) of the Five Inversions harnessed the RED Light in a Central Battery onYsmault to create the Red Lantern Corps. He was enraged because the Guardians of the Universe allowed the robotic Manhunters to wipe out Space Sector 666, millions of years ago. The Red Lanterns become so consumed with rage that they are filled with its red energy, which replaces their blood and heart. Therefore, removal of their red rings results in death. Red Lanterns are berserkers/animals- totally savage and consumed by rage. Being at the far left of the emotional spectrum (ROY G BIV), Red Light is consuming, as is Violet Light at the right end of the emotional spectrum.
With prayer came HOPE. Symbolized like a bird-like entity, its color is BLUE. Hope is the most powerful of all colors, however it draws its power from the Green Light of Will, and requires Green nearby to become powerful. The Blue Light was channeled by two exiled rouge Guardians of the Universe,Ganthet and Sayd, to create the Blue Lantern Corps. The Blue Lantern Corps are zen-like (like Jedi).
Finally the rarest of all emotions came last. It’s an emotion that not many people have. It’s called COMPASSION. All Geoff Johns has given us so far about the INDIGO color: “And at last, compassion is offered to us all.” The elusive Indigo Tribe has harnessed its power. It’s Emotional Entity is an octopus, which is know to change colors and camouflage itself.
