Guest Review: Marley & Me (2008)

Submitted by Byrdman
I cried around two-thirds of the movie to the end of it. And I don't mean holding back tears, I mean I was out and out moaning and sobbing, that's how much it touched me. Anyone who has ever loved a dog or who has had a connection with an animal would have the same emotional experience.

The kids in the theater laughed at the funny dog scenes, and got real quiet after halfway through it.

The last phrase of the movie is very touching as well. Anyone who sees this movie will appreciate their treaured pet and it helps you realize that they are not going to be here forever.

I had read the book previously, and although the movie is true to the overall theme, the focus on the movie is about the marriage strains between Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston, who by the way, won't be winning any Oscars for their roles. The book version was more focused on Marley.

Anyway, I strongly recommend you see this movie.
DAMIAN SAYS: Pass.

Quick Review: Pineapple Express (2008)

Pineapple Express is this generation's "cool drug" movie. Since surfing the net and smoking weed seem to go hand in hand nowadays, you've probably already saw it. It's loaded with pot references, habits, the awkwardness of socializing with your drug dealer, and other scenes that are extremely funny until you realize how this "subculture" is really the hidden majority in the U.S.

Although The Express is already a cult movie, with Obama rumored to legalize marijuana smoking- thus making it socially and legally acceptable- P.E. has potential to be an all-time classic.

Of course, it's a movie that only people who smoke recreational (or daily) could truly appreciate the goofiness of. Others would be 100% offended by this stoner comedy romanticizing the drug culture.

Kinda tough for me to truly give it a rating...but I do know that the characters are VERY realistic.

DailySkew Post #900: 2008 Year in Review

2008 lived up to its billing, but ultimately it was no different than 1864, 1919, or 1983 or any other year- people lived, people died, and the world will never be the same again.

Eneagram Personality Type #8 (It was his year, 2008) is the Challenger, and personification of a "dog eat dog" world, with skewed notions of fairness and justice.

Before I get into this, my condolences to everyone who lost a family member this year, dealt with sickness or injury, or painful circumstances beyond their control.

2008

From the cultural standpoint in America and other countries- it's official: the Internet is here, and here to stay, and has never been more influential in our daily lives. We truly live in an instant digital world. Whereas the Internet and digital world has been here very strong in recent years, in my view 2008 was 100% fully accepting of this world, and the new technology and systems became the NORMAL state of business: Google, Facebook, myspace, youtube, friendster, JustinTV, craigslist, ebay, amazon, webcams, streaming video, downloading torrents, instant messaging, Twitter, Yahoo news, e-mail, surfing on mobile phones, iTunes, photo albums, blogs, etc. are no longer niche geeky things.

In fact, digital communication has become the norm for me, now that my friends don't live nearby and my extended family lives overseas. It's my habit, for better or for worse, and this is how I express myself now.

The MEDIA and its role in feeding us what "THEY" determine to be newsworthy [marketable] never ceases to get my attention, and the presiential election and economy were the two major problems I had with MEDIA coverage this year, in addition to the MEDIA'S Scale of Importance. The Snapshot Joe reporting by the MEDIA generally frustrates me when I speak with people who have been spoon fed everything, and regurgitate to me the "facts" at face value without questioning. I've learned to bite my tongue in "real life" when interacting with people (blogging and reading comments just doesn't seem *as* real to me).

The fact that the MEDIA is an Unhealthy Type 8 (short sighted, jumping from topic to topic, no memory) just added to the chaos this year.

Ultimately, I don't believe humanity in general took a step forward this year, and I kinda stopped worrying about it as much. Many of the comments posted here and other sites seem to demonstrate the futility of it all. It seems that in this world of terrorism, sexual slavery, poverty, and economic recession, Lazy Man Ethics (LME) is the spiritual currency.

As much as people like to criticize patriotism, organized religion, or the post-war "good old days" that we experienced in the late 40's and 50's, there is a lot to be said about feeling part of something greater than yourself, and to have an identity and purpose.

What's 2008's identity? "Change" and "Bail me out". Great.

Thanks to the Internet, we have many options to choose as to what we want to be bombarded with. When I was a kid it was just local radio, 5-channel network TV, three newspapers, and magazines. Now, I have a multitude of options and variety.

I haven't listened to conservative talk radio since around Nov.5 and actually feel good about that, especially since based on the shows I listened to, Rush Limbaugh was more accurate than CNN. I'm not saying I'm I look down upon political junkies, or that I'm somehow "evolved"- because discussing the issues is good, but I've been staying away from the Talking Heads in general since November due to the fact that I personally have no control over anything that they are fear mongering. I mean, everyone is an economics expert by the water cooler. I never knew we had so many experts walking around, with all of their contradictory theories.

Fear and panic- that's what millions are buying right now, after buying hope and change all year. Greed and materialism are at the roots of all of the suffering, as is the attachment to security and status. I've been expecting the anti-matter cloud to come and wipe everything out since July 1985, and it hasn't come yet. When it does, it does; it can't be stopped. I understand it's human nature to panic, complain, speculate, and try to control, but 2008 made me a bit tired to constantly rant and rave about every presidential policy, bill proposal, economic theory, regulation, and who should be blamed for the latest injustice, etc.

To me, all of this noise blocks our true perceptions of reality: we have our health (hopefully), and if you don't or are living with a handicap, you still have enough energy to find Skew.DailySkew.com and read this post. You have a computer, Internet access, or a mobile phone. No matter what your situtation is, you are blessed. Don't let the MEDIA or the inner demons that we all have tell you differently.

Let's hope 2009 is a bit more peaceful and stable.

Happy New Year.

Did you hear about dollar store franchises?

With the recession here, people are forced to cut back spending and look for good deals. I am sure you have noticed how empty some stores are; that's because consumers are looking for inexpensive items. Now is probably the best time to buy a dollar store franchise. Those stores always have customers, and it is easy to own this fastest growing franchise.

JustinTV and lifecasting

JUSTIN

"Lifecasting" is a hot trend, and a symbol of humanity's growing infatuation with social networking, video, reality TV, and watching other people's lives. The irony is, of course, that all being "social" online is a contraction.

JustinTV, founded in San Fransisco, CA, with a Linux box and a mobile streaming camera, is constantly growing and evolving. It was originally one channel- the life of Justin Kan walking around 24/7. Now it has many lifecasting channels, not to mention unauthorized live streaming of sporting events, satellite channels, TV shows, movies, etc. With live chat, you can read and post comments while watching whatever stream is on.

You can also watch other people play video games online. 2,385 people are currently watching birds eat in a cage. I KNEW I should have brought the cameras to see Pan's World.

And, of course, it is the place to chat with live underage teens for free.

It's Youtube, MySpace, craigslist, reality TV, reruns, and The Truman Show all rolled up into one. And it's FREE!

The rules: no nudity (not enforced). Copyright? Copy wha-?

By the way, it's NOT cool to mention the JustinTV suicide while chatting there. That kid cried wolf so many times, it's not even funny. No trolling! LOL Well, gotta run. I gotta watch people sleep on JustinTV. If I get bored, I can always change the channel and watch Star Trek channel, which plays every episode from every series. That's over 400 hours of enjoyment right there. I can also check out the boxing or wrestling channels. But there are no commercials or pause button, so you have to urinate in a glass.

JustinTV: keeping people at home one day at a time.

Welcome to the Matrix, I hope you enjoy your stay.

Watching a patio streaming LIVE from Florida.

Review: Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)

Hellboy 2 is the most underrated superhero movie of the year, and may be the most overlooked 2008 movie- period. The reason is simple: it got lost in the shuffle with the other superheroes: Iron Man, Batman, The Hulk, and-uhh, that Will Smith superhero movie [Will needs to take a break- I'm sick of seeing him.] I guess we only had enough money in our wallets at the time, and we said, "We'll wait for the DVD". We underestimated Hellboy even though his first movie was A+++ because he's not a big name, and is from an independent comic book (Dark Horse), not Marvel or DC. Well, if you missed it the first time and liked the first Hellboy movie, you will LOVE Hellboy 2.

No spoilers here: The movie picks off without us having to know or remember anything from the first movie- it's very user friendly, and although I'm sure movie watchers have a tendency to ask questions about the first movie if there's a sequel, it's not necessary to watch.

Hellboy (Ron Perlman) is as funny, tough, cocky, yet sensitive as usual. Thankfully his girlfriend (Selma Blair) is back as is the rest of the main cast (Abe Sapien- the fishman and the director of the paranormal organization).

Film Director Guillermo del Toro really created a masterpiece- from visual style, special effects, mood, and themes. It really balances out horror, fantasy, and humor all at once. The actual antagonist- the Dark Elf Prince, and the actual Golden Army itself are truly indestructible. The human race is 100% in jeopardy of getting wiped out.

There are many scary demons, huge threats, and the pacing is like an action video game or fast-paced comic book- in other words- there are no boring parts. Soundtrack is A+.

General consensus from critics puts Hellboy II in the B to B+ range (88%), but the box office is much more telling ($152,133,319 worldwide, much more than the first movie). Character creator Mike Mignola is hopefully very proud of his creation!

I'm not even going to dignify any Hellboy haters because the movie was a flawless superhero movie. As erokdarksteel says, "...there are people in this world who think that belittling others tastes in various artforms somehow makes [him] a superior person."

Whereas The Dark Knight was for adults only, Hellboy II was rated PG-13, because of the CGI violence. At two hours, there is much more to explore in Hellboy's universe, especially since there's no time wasted on his origins. It is really packed with a great story and action sequences.

Some parts of the movie feel like a dark side of Lords of the Rings, with some Frankenstein and X-Files thrown in. It truly is- excuse the pun- the dark horse movie of the year. It is actually better than the first one, which I hold in high regard and must have seen a dozen times.

Christmas Trends

Merry Christmas everybody...I guess nowadays that means total strangers actually smile to me and say hello today. [EDIT- Sure enough, some older woman said hello to me and my dog this morning.]

2008 Christmas trends:

I see a bunch of parked cars in my neighborhood. I guess that means due to the cold weather fronts in most of America, many traveling plans have been wiped out. Not to mention the cost of plane tickets.

Due to being bombarded with the financial CRISIS and coming Great Depression, I think many families have taken it easy this year and just trying to appreciate their families by staying home. I think everyone is RELIEVED that they survived 2008.

As much as many people have been campaigning to stop credit cards and to get away from the credit mentality- for many families, using credit cards was the only way to celebrate Christmas, especially with so many people on unemployment and food stamps.

The merchandising aspect- that Christmas MUST be celebrated with gift exchanges will never go away, even if our economy gets worse and worse. It's our own faults, you know. People expect...nay DEMAND gifts instead of actually celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior, Bara- I mean Jesus of Nazareth. God sent down his son, and he died for our sins. I'd recommend watching Mel Gibson's Passion for more info. Ben Hur, too.

What can't I bring on the plane?

The recent trend of travellers trying to get past their cheesy Sno-globes past the TSA has created a new sub-culture of renegades- Snow globe Insurgents. They believe that the Bush/Cheney fascists that run the airports are violating their unalienable rights to bring a LIQUID onto an AIRPLANE.

Do you know what the first reaction of office-mates and Internet message boards is when I explain the "plight" of one of them that had to hand over his snow globe? "Why didn't he check it in with baggage instead of carry-on?"

Here's a message from the TSA..in fact they created a nice-EASY to remember slogan called 3-1-1:

Make Your Trip Better Using 3-1-1

3-1-1 for carry-ons = 3 ounce bottle or less (by volume) ; 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin. One-quart bag per person limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring. 3 oz. container size is a security measure.

Consolidate bottles into one bag and X-ray separately to speed screening.

Be prepared. Each time TSA searches a carry-on it slows down the line. Practicing 3-1-1 will ensure a faster and easier checkpoint experience.

3-1-1 is for short trips. If in doubt, put your liquids in checked luggage.

Declare larger liquids. Medications, baby formula and food, and breast milk are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding three ounces and are not required to be in the zip-top bag. Declare these items for inspection at the checkpoint.

Come early and be patient. Heavy travel volumes and the enhanced security process may mean longer lines at security checkpoints.

TSA working with our partners. TSA works with airlines and airports to anticipate peak traffic and be ready for the traveling public.

Interview: Dick Cheney attacks Joe Biden

Vice President Dick Cheney...random quotes in his final appearance...go!!

"[Bush and I have] been here for eight years now, eventually you wear out your welcome in this business but I'm very comfortable with where we are and what we've achieved substantively. And frankly I would not want to be one of those guys who spends all his times reading the polls. I think people like that shouldn't serve in these jobs."

"[Joe Biden] also said that all the powers and responsibilities of the executive branch are laid out in Article I of the Constitution. Well, they're not. Article I of the Constitution is the one on the legislative branch. Joe's been chairman of the Judiciary Committee, a member of the Judiciary Committee in the Senate for 36 years, teaches constitutional law back in Delaware, and can't keep straight which article of the Constitution provides for the legislature and which provides for the executive. So I think I'd write that off as campaign rhetoric. I don't take it seriously."

"If he wants to diminish the office of the vice president, that's obviously his call. President-elect Obama will decide what he wants in a vice president and apparently, from the way they're talking about it, he does not expect him to have as consequential a role as I have had during my time."

"Thank to the War on Terror, the nation hasn't been attacked in seven years."

"The president of the United States now for 50 years is followed at all times, 24 hours a day, by a military aide carrying a football that contains the nuclear codes that he would use and be authorized to use in the event of a nuclear attack on the United States. He could launch the kind of devastating attack the world has never seen."

"He doesn't have to check with anybody. He doesn't have to call the Congress. He doesn't have to check with the courts. He has that authority because of the nature of the world we live in."

"I did disagree with the decision [to fire Rumsfeld in 2006]. The president doesn't always take my advice. I was a Rumsfeld man. I'd helped recruit him and I thought he did a good job for us."

Comments: True villains have an unapologetic and self-righteous tone, and live in a skewed reality.

When DID the U.S. Jump the Shark?

The fact that there IS some Internet chatter about the United States jumping the shark, does make this informal post appropriate.

On thing that is important to note: many people don't like to think that they were born into a Jumped World- they prefer to believe it went bad during their lifetimes. This is due to nostalgia and having a purpose in life.

It could very well be that the humanity jumped the shark since Day One, which is actually an option on the JumptheShark.com for TV shows.

For now, let's keep that out of the scope- since I'm writing this while I'm eating lunch at work.

Let's get some candidates for...When DID the U.S. jump the shark?
  • Revolutionary War defeats and lack of unity
  • Giving in to the pirates of Barbary
  • Slavery, lack of civil rights for women and minorities
  • Trail of Tears and Native American relocation
  • Civil War era (Confederacy and more)
  • Spanish American War and U.S. Imperialism in Philippines and other countries
  • Lincoln assassination
  • Great Depression
  • Jim Crow Laws, segregation, racism
  • Scopes Monkey Trial
  • The New Deal
  • Japanese Internment Camps
  • Hiroshima
  • Nagasaki
  • Nuclear testing in Nevada (radiation fallout on civilians)
  • McCarthy Hearings
  • Experiments on mentally handicapped and physically handicapped
  • Korean War
  • Bay of Pigs
  • JFK Assassination
  • MLK Assassination
  • RFK Assassination
  • School busing/forced integration
  • Vietnam War
  • Rock & Roll and Woodstock and hippies
  • Drugs are cool
  • Legalized abortion
  • Watergate Nixon
  • Saying God and Jesus is taboo at certain places
  • MEDIA covers war on location, exposes that everyone has feet of clay
  • Birth of political correctness and historical revisionism
  • All voices and opinions must be equal, all religions must be accepted, no matter how flaky
  • Iran Contra Reagan Ollie North
  • The War on Drugs
  • Insane sports, singer, and actor contracts
  • "Greed is Good", Wallstreet, Yuppies, etc.
  • AIDS and HIV (STDs)
  • Rap + Hip-hop
  • MTV, and the birth of short attention spans
  • Clinton and Monica
  • Internet
  • Cell phones
  • O.J. not guilty
  • Bush steals election in 2000
  • craigslist, youtube, myspace
  • Enron, WorldCom, and other corporate scandals
  • 9/11
  • War in Iraq
  • The War on Terror (including Patriot Act, "enemy combatants", etc.)
  • The Great Walmart of China and outsourcing U.S. jobs
  • Amnesty for illegal immigrants?
  • Re-electing Bush
  • Bailouts
  • Giving in to the pirates of Aden
  • President Obama
  • What do you think? Add more?
  • Never jumped! Everything is aight! We are still a Superpower and we have shown to preserve and overcome all shark jumping moments.

Review: Final Crisis #5 (Final CRISIS in general)

AKA I Am Completely Lost

legionfan1964 from the DC Comics message boards got this rant off his chest:

I've been reading DC comics continuously since before I was 10 years old, I'm in my 40s now, and I have very little idea what is going on in Final Crisis. Please pardon me while I rant for a minute.

There is no narrator and there are no central main characters (that I can identify as such) that are really driving the story. Yeah, I can tell that Darkseid is the bad guy, he's instituted a big master plan, and the world is in trouble. But this is basically the plot of nearly every comic book. What makes a story interesting are the subtleties, how characters interact, how they respond to the bad guy's threat, and how they triumph over the bad guy, using their powers or smarts or whatever. None of that is apparent to me in Final Crisis - it's either glossed over or expressed in a way that I am unable to follow.

I don't read every DC book, but I think I have a good working knowledge of most characters in the DC universe. And from the way they are drawn / portrayed, I don't know lots of the characters in this story, or even whether or not I am SUPPOSED to know them. I can't follow the time-frame of this story. When the action changes from one location to another, I can't tell where I was or where I am now, who is talking, who is fighting, or often what they are talking about - just that Darkseid is a bad dude.

I know Grant Morrison has written some pretty good stuff, and JG Jones has drawn some pretty good stuff, but this is just a confusing mess. I can't help but think that a few captions here & there or some "Previously..." recaps would have gone a long way toward making this story more accessible and enjoyable. I really hope it gets a lot more coherent in the remaining 2 issues.

Sorry for the rant, just had to get this off my chest. Does anyone else feel this way or am I alone in this?
Dozens of fanboys disagreed with him on the message boards- a bit condescendingly of course. But he's right- FINAL CRISIS requires a reader to search blogs, message boards, and interviews to determine what is going on.

Writer Grant Morrison had stated that, similar to techno music, he wanted to cut out the unnecessary transitions and exposition in traditional comics by decompressing the issues. Unfortunately it resulted in what seems like random scenes, unknown settings, and it doesn't help that DC characters constantly change costumes and artists take liberties with creative interpretation. It doesn't help that there are no true protagonists, either.

The apologists (and as FINAL CRISIS has lumbered along all year- including a delays- they grow) are out in full force. For some reason, they have no issues with not having a narrator, and are 100% versed in New God history, and can follow the plot, awkward transitions, and ambiguous artwork that is subject to a multitude of interpretation (my initial observations of JG Jones and Carlos Pacheco's panel layout and scenes are almost always incorrect. ) In fact, if you were an inspiring artist and tried to sell FINAL CRISIS to a publisher, you'd be laughed at because it's impossible to follow coherently. I've truly never experienced something like that since the Image Boys back in the 1990's. It's like no one cares about Sequential Art 101.

In terms of plot, the basic outline IS simple, but for some reason it takes 5 issues and a bunch of mini-series just to say: Darkseid has figured out the anti-life equation, and is turning our world into the 5th world. Like the heroes, the readers have to figure everything out. The bad news is, one must re-read every issue and spin-off to even remember what's going on, PLUS read online research, wikipedia, reviews, and message boards to find out what's going on.

As many fans stopped getting FINAL CRISIS after FC#1 failed to live up to expectations, the remaining fans are all loyalists, so the reviews and annotated page analysis blogs are mostly positive. Morrison's interviews and his stated goals are very positive, too. In fact, he really has a good grip on it, and the scripts looked great. The execution was poor, and the target audience is too small for a CRISIS event.

In conclusion, ONLY by reading the online annotations, and having a fanboy connect all the obscure references and dangling plot points and symbols, can FINAL CRISIS be fully understood. To me, that weakens it. For younger readers, it's not a big deal. To me it is.

Compare FC to Marvel's Secret Invasion. Each issue of SI has a recap of the previous issue, a "who's who" at the beginning, and easier to follow artwork. SI has its own set of problems (namely nothing happens for the bulk of the series), but at least it's "user friendly".

So, no, legionfan1964, you are not alone. I just hope you are not actually buying these comics in this financial CRISIS. I borrow them from a friend.

Marvel and DC dropped the ball this year- they continue to hype and hype and fail to deliver of the crossover events.

Arabs protest the shoe insult against Bush

Free Muntader al-Zaidi.

The so-called "Arab world" is protesting the shoe hurlers confinement by Iraqi authorities, and they call it an injustice that he is detained.

According to MEDIA reports, many Arabs supported the shoe throws, and demand that al-Zaidi be freed, and have no charges filed. They are very upset.

Only in this world, could a reporter that throws two shoes at a head of state be considered a martyr or a victim.

When I play the world history computer simulation game Civilization IV, do you know what I do when the world I created starts to get imbalanced and out of control? I reboot the game.

TallGrass Distribution CEO killed by ex-employee

TallGrass CEO Benjamin David Banky was murdered by 61-year old Eric Allen Kirkpatrick at an office Christmas party in Vancouver. Eric, who was "was made redundant" on 12-11-08, gave new meaning to the words "you're fired" by opening fire at the party.

It's truly a nightmare before Christmas.

Someone with Eric's name had previously posted on a website:

"I had a very stressful job that just kept getting more stressful, then my wife got cancer. Did my employer show any compassion? No, they upped the stress level while my wife fought her now-losing battle with cancer. As a result, I developed epilepsy. Then I was fired and two weeks in the hospital undergoing tests confirmed that it wasn't caused by physical trauma as initially thought but probably stress. Then my wife died and I'll be on these nauseating anti-seizure medications the rest of my life."

DailySkew psychologist Dr. Richard Hoffman says, "A person who would do this might have some kind of significant acute mental health problem, but more likely they are stressed and there are other multiple factors, such as family and financial issues."

Don't let President Bush's age or humor fool you- the man has a high dexterity and reflexes.

Sources say that President Bush played Wii fitness soccer to get into shape:

"Watch those shoes!"

Seriously, the Secrete Service is a bit slow to react. The SECOND shoe toss was uncalled for.

Review: Nintendo Wii

I got my Nintendo Wii as a shared anniversary gift for my wife and I in September. My Dance Dance Revolution mat broke for my PS2, so I figured I can get her the Wii Fitness to continue our workout routines.

Anyway, we both enjoyed it.

Let me quickly review the system itself in case you're looking for it for a holiday gift:

Interface:
  • You are immersed in Nintendo Channels, so it feels like you're on a global network. You can create a Mii of yourself, friends, and family. This is your icon that plays in the games.
  • If you buy the Nintendo Internet channel (a one-time fee of $10), you can browse on the TV using Opera. Opera has no flash, and, of course, you can't watch MLB.com baseball games, Hulu TV shows, or play old Nintendo games for free on VNes. YouTube and DailySkew work fine, though. You generally can't "download" stuff from Opera- it's just a very basic TV browser.
  • The Wii Remote is a great revolutionary controller. You can either point or use the arrows as a backup.
  • Setting up the system was not as bad as I had feared. I had some issues typing in my million digit router security code to go on the network, and had to search for help on my real computer.
  • "Syncing" remote controls and other devices seems a bit awkward at first, as does changing batteries. But that's just me.
Limitations
  • There's only enough space on the hard drive, so you can fill it up (I read) if you download a bunch of WiiWare or Virtual Console Classic Games. In that case, you'd need to buy an SD Card.
  • Nintendo is a lot like Apple in that you can't just plug your own external USB drive or make legal modifications.
  • Can't watch DVD movies.
  • Head-to-head chat for online play is not there because Nintendo wants to protect your children and avoid the trash-talking craigslist mentality on X-Box 360 Live.
  • Take a rest- you can get carpal tunnel syndrome.
Games:
  • Wii Sports is the usual "in the box" game. These are fun mini games that demonstrate the enjoyment of using the Wii Remotes to interact with the system. Bowling, Tennis, Baseball, Golf, and Boxing are all fun- especially head-to-head with your friend. However, don't get any delusions- they are not deep games, just super-demos, as I suspected when I first saw the commercials years ago.
  • Wii Fitness is the other bundle pack you can get. This is the only "game" my wife uses. It is a fully interactive workout routine and yoga exercise program. It uses the Wii balance board- which is an amazing device. A Wall-E like character guides you through everything, and all your progress statistics are saved. I guess I can review this in full another time, but I can say that the features, mini-games, and workout drills are excellent in keeping in shape, losing weight, and getting your blood flowing. It's the best experience on the Wii, although "gamers" stay away from it, obviously.
  • WiiWare are mostly 3rd party software games you can download and play on your Wii for a small fee. Most suck, but there are a handful of addictive gimmick games. Be sure to read reviews before buying on impulse. WiiWare games have a certain file size and it's pretty hard to fit online, 2 player, and user-generated content on the game on top of the single player endeavors. In other words, you truly need to lower expectations for WiiWare.
  • Virtual Console Classic Game- you can download (and pay for individually) hundreds of video games from the classic systems- NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, Turbo Graphix 16, and NeoGeo. There are not enhanced or remixed, nor do they use the infrared remote capabilities.
  • Most video game magazines and sites highly rate the following games for Wii: Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy, Resident Evil 4, WarioWare: Smooth Moves, World of Goo, Okami, No More Heroes,T he Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princes, Mario Kart Wii, MLB Power Pros 2008, and Dance Dance Revolution: Hottest Party 2.

Hacking and other illegal stuff

It's no secret that you can download emulators and ROMS of all those classic games, and play on your PC or TV if you have a TV tuner. But that's the least of the Wii's vulnerabilities. Thanks to people like Ianare, who don't believe in corporations or paying for anything, you can violate Nintendo's warranty and break the law by installing a MOD chip, and download Wii torrents. In fact, if you do enough searching you can find out to bypass all of Wii's limitations. You can play any new or old game for free on your Wii system. You can be the "cool 35-year old guy" on your block, while 10-year olds come over your house to play. Of course, you can also pay heavy fines or go to prison. Your choice.

Extra stuff you may need:

Another Wii Remote, another Nunchuk controller, Wireless connection for optimal performance, credit card to download WiiWare games, your own yoga mat, classic controllers if you want to play old games, dance mat if you want to dance, SD card if you run out of HD space, infared keyboard if you use the browser all the time.

Price Tag

Buying bundles, games, and accessories from retail stores is not recommended. You need to search ebay.com, buy.com, overstock.com, and amazon.com to get very cheap deals like I did. Shipping and handling are no longer dealbreakers as the market drops to the consumer's favor. Still, I think it's around $200- $400 depending on your wants. If you search for Used items, you can save a lot.

Conclusion: Target audience and appeal

Wii is not a hardcore gaming system. Big-time video game addicts play X-Box 360 and PS3 to the graphics, music, flexibility, dark games, and online wars. Wii is for kids, or older players who don't want to be couch potatoes anymore. Nintendo is the Disney of the video game industry. I personally enjoy the physical interaction of the remote, balance board, and dance mat. It truly has helped me stay in shape, while enjoying myself. Most games don't have a long replayability like PC games do (nothing beats the fun of my PC simulation games), but that could be that I'm getting older and lack the enthusiasm as a little boy or teenager. You really need to choose your games wisely, and if you're not motivated enough to workout, the Wii balance board and dance mat will collect dust next to your exercise bike and weight set you never got around to using. The only thing I can guarantee is that kids love it.

Pan: The leader of the goats, sheep, and pigs at Tradewinds Park

This is how the official Broward County websites describe Tradewinds Park:

"Tradewinds Park is an approximately 627-acre Broward County regional park and is located on both sides of Sample Road at 3600 W. Sample Rd. in Coconut Creek, just west of Florida's Turnpike. The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m."

This is what they don't tell you:

The livestock pen at the farm (some people mistakenly believe it is a petting zoo) is run by one of the most powerful and magical goats of all time. His name is Pan, and he is colored black and white, with penetrating eyes and sharp horns.

Last Sunday, CCB3 and I observed how Pan and the other goats and sheep live and interact with each other. Whereas some families simply walked by the open stables and pen and saw a bunch of animals lying on the ground resting, CCB3 and I stood for hours watching the nuancies and details of Pan's World.

Here's our report:

Every society is run by alpha males, whether it be at your workplace or the livestock pen at Tradewinds Park. Pan is the dominant male in that society. At first we saw Pan patrolling the area, and he stood out because of his unusual color and mesmerizing eyes. Not only was Pan the most physically active, but he charged the other goats and sheep who dared lie down on the wooden Lookout Point (a stair/slide) in the center of the stable. After Pan cleared out Lookout Point, he proceeded to strut, grandstand, and stare down the female animals and any male animal foolish enough to challenge him.

Pan sharpened his horns, flexed his chest, and exercised his hooves. When a female goat approached CCB3 and I after I made a goat call, Pan ignored us, and sent mental telepathy to the female to "keep on movin' bit_h".

In fact, CCB3 and I heard Pan taunt and threaten all the males there. Pan, who sent these communications while he stared them down, said such threats as "Step down, punk", "What?", "I thought so...", "Whatcha gonna do, boy?", and "Sit your @$$ down".

We also overheard Gar-Gar try to rally the sheep and goats to overthrown Pan again. Gar-Gar used to rule the pen years ago, before Pan rose to power by crippling Gar-Gar's legs.

We also observed the mischievous Pan, Jr. Junior is an unstoppable force who knows he is protected by his father. Only Pan, Jr. was allowed to ascend Lookout Point with Pan's permission. The pathetic Gar-Gar resents Pan Jr.

GAR-GAR: "Sheep, I bring news from Aldaron- news that can defeat Pan! Wait, please, you must listen!"

Pan allows Mexican chickens and roosters to make brief cameo appearances from the other pen. He also is well aware of the pigs next door to his area. As long as they have food, they are not a threat to his society. Birds are allowed to rest in their nests in the shade.

Pan seemingly was taking a rest in the middle of the day, as he lied down at the entrance of Lookout Point. However, we watched and chuckled as Pan sensed when one goat approached the other end of Lookout Point. All Pan had to do was slightly adjust his weight, and the other goat was caught in mid-step, and pretended that he was just "passing by".

Pan's life is tough because he must always supervise and be aware of everything. The sheep and other goats are not productive enough for Pan. We felt Pan sigh as one goat jumped into their water tub and fell asleep. Pan has been grooming the undisciplined Pan, Jr. but is not ready to turn over the reigns of power to him. Indeed, Pan will not transfer power willingly. Years from now, Pan Jr. must slay his father to claim his throne at Lookout Point.

At the end of our day, Pan put on a majestic and regal demonstration of his masculinity and power: he began to bang his head on lookout point, stood up and sharpened his horns. All of the female animals froze and worshiped him. After 6:00PM, when Tradewinds Park closed, Pan has his way with his preferred mates.

Gar-Gar did his best to look away from Pan, and pleaded with the humans that passed by to help his rebellion to overthrow Pan. Many times Gar-Gar looked at CCB3 and I with his sad and defeated eyes begging for us to help. Little did Gar-Gar know that we support Pan's reign.

Long live PAN!

Do diet pills work?

To answer the question simply, yes- diet pills do work. Many people have reported that using Lipovox, Ephedrasil Hardcore, Myoffeine, Zalestrim, and other diet pills and formulas have suppressed their appetites or burned calories faster than not taking them at all. Of course, you must balance your physical exercise and food choices along with diet pills, but the testimonials and results show that you can drop the pounds.

Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich arrested

By now, you've heard of the major news story about the corruption charge and arrest of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, and you, of course, have piled on the criticism, injustice, and your deserved cynicism of corrupt governor officials.

So allow me to take a totally different angle (just because I don't feel like ranting and raving about Chicago politics and corruption):

Here is a partial transcript from the press conference by Patrick Fitzgerald, United States attorney general for the Northern District of Illinois:

MR. FITZGERALD:

This is a sad day for government. It's a very sad day for Illinois government. Governor Blagojevich has taken us to a truly new low.

Governor Blagojevich has been arrested in the middle of what we can only describe as a political corruption crime spree. We acted to stop that crime spree.

The most appalling conduct Governor Blagojevich engaged in, according to the complaint filed today or unsealed today, is that he attempted to sell a Senate seat, the Senate seat he had the sole right to under Illinois to appoint to replace President-elect Obama.
Jeez, what happened to innocent until proven guilty. Shouldn't an official government agent attempt to be neutral or objective? Frankly, I dislike when the Justice Department uses the MEDIA to help make a conviction. Feel free to call me a bleeding heart liberal, naive, idealistic, or a defender of criminals, but it is kinda LAME when law enforcement and prosecutors have to make their case to the MEDIA and people to force the suspect to plead and cut a deal. If that doesn't work they hope for have a jury thinking the suspect is guilty. We've seen it with the Duke suspects and Barry Bonds.

Hundreds of millions of people never heard of Blagojevich today, but now we "know" that he is one of the biggest scums of the earth, an abuser of authority, plain mean, and did something horrific. And he did it all on TAPE! We know that he has been arrested by the FBI, and the Justice Department told us all the details, so he MUST be guilty, and this MUST be a serious, serious crime.

People love stories like this, and I have no winning argument. I'd just wanted to focus on the MEDIA hysteria and how the Justice Department manipulates it to put pressure on a defendant to get an easy plea.

By the way, remember the MEDIA hoopla about NY Governor Eliot Spitzer waaaaay back in March? Remember how the MEDIA and Justice Department convicted him publicly back then buy saying he used campaign funds for his hooker addiction?

Last month, U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia said investigators found no evidence that Spitzer or his office misused public or campaign funds for prostitution. Spitzer writes for MSN's Slate now.

Just sayin'.

Anyway, right wingers are trying to blame Obama for the Illinois governor's behavior, like he was responsible or "knew about it".

Please.

Tashman Technologies: Year 10

M.O.T. News- Overmind the Great celebrates his 10th anniversary at Tashman Technologies on December 9. Although the initial reaction from many of his current and former co-workers varies, Overmind himself is proud of his accomplishment.

"The bottom line is that it's pretty rare for someone to stay at job for 10 straight years, and to have...survived the world of Tashman," Overmind said via Moonbase ComLink.

"It took determination, technical skill, psychological growth, acceptance, building friendships, communication, having a bunch of fights...and luck," he chuckled.

However, some of Overmind's former co-workers-who spoke under the condition of anonymity- have few positives to say about Overmind's run.
"He wasted the prime years of his life there...he could have got a medical degree by now, that's how smart he was. Why he stayed? I have no idea."

"The economy has been unstable for years, but this guy stayed in one place. I wonder how many people he backstabbed along the way to save his hide? How many silver pieces did CEO drop in his open palm?"

"Overmind is still there? I feel sorry for him."

"Tashman is still in the teleportation business? I thought they went under years ago!"

"It's like a self-imposed prison."

"Are you kidding me?"

"Just goes to show you scum always rises to the top."

"He never did anything, all he did was sit in his office, surfing the Net. I worked a lot harder and got laid off."

"I was better than he was, he just brownosed his way to middle-management."

"He should have been fired 9 years ago."

"Big deal. I'm making $80,000 doing nothing all day. Screw Tashman and everyone in it."

"Tashman is insignificant in the teleportation industry. Their market share has dropped every year since Year 5."

"I'm concerned. What is he going to do after Tashman closes it's doors next year?"
Overmind is not surprised by some of the negativity.

"I can understand resentment or ridicule by some. Other opportunities came up during my 10-year run, but it was proven time and time again that I made the correct decision to stay on board. American society always pushes taking risks, being your own boss, spending tens of thousands to get a degree...but I decided to stick with Tash. All I gotta say is: don't hate the playah; hate the game. If they are going to be envious of my stability or my so-called "chosen status", that's on them. Believe me, these are shoes that no one would want to walk in."

Indeed, psychologist Dr. Richard Hoffman doubts that any of Overmind's critics could mentally last 10 years at Tashman.

"It takes a truly unique individual to work there day-in and day-out there. The historical turnover statistics are mind-boggling. I think it's something like 400+ former employees there. Couple that with the dominant and unhealthy personality types and politics that Overmind had to deal with every day, and you have a true survivor."

As far as the secret of his longevity, Overmind gives this insight: "I've always accepted how unstable Tashman is, so I've always worked each day like it was my last, taking nothing for granted, and always checking my p's and q's. No matter what my position, I always thought I'd be fired or laid off the next day, and I still do. I never rested on my laurels and never gave in to the naysayers, critics, plotters, or disgruntled people I've encountered over the years."

And, in the end, Overmind is a portrait of stability in an unstable environment.

With many experts predicting the end of Tashman this year or next, what does the future hold for Overmind?

"I've learned trying to predict the future is impossible. I am only in control of certain things, so all I can vouch for is my willpower to keep on performing well at whatever I have to do to put food on the table for my family. You can rest assured that I always have a plan, though."

Japan, Yamato Colony, Morikami

In the early 20th century, Japanese immigrants formed the Yamato Colony in what is now Boca Raton, Florida. They literally brought their culture here, and set up their own farming community. A couple of generations lived there until World War II, when the U.S. military "relocated" the remaining colonists, and seized their land and property- something they worked on for their entire life. Florida Atlantic University and the Boca Raton Airport were built over the site.

However, their legacy and final memory remains at Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach, when George Morikami donated his farm to Palm Beach County to be used as a park. The Museum opened in 1977, and the main building opened in 1993. Construction of the gardens began in 1993.

The following are pictures from my visit (along with CCB3 and my wife)...it truly was stepping into a time machine to land in pre-imperialistic Japan. It was a beautiful experience- no noise, no pollution, no outside world, no problems. Entrance was FREE Saturday, due to a promotion. Special thanks to Tony Vahl for letting me know about Morikami last year.

Jolan Besana Free at Last: Filipino released by Solomia Pirates

Making his way to Manila, family man and my wife's brother-in-law, Joland Besana is free at last. Let us all take the time to celebrate his return.

"Although they provided us food, the sound of the cocking guns and sight of them being pointed at us was a horrifying experience. Those were torturous and painful days that we'll not forget very soon."

"I could not imagine dying without seeing my children. I used to hear of hijacks, but had never experienced it. But I kept praying we all get home safely. When they captured us, they demanded our mobile phones and money."

"I hid my wedding ring, but started wearing it only after the pirates started being friendly, but they took it days before we were released."

OJ Simpson sentenced: So?

So OJ Simpson is going away to prison for 9-33 (yeah, right) years for kidnapping and armed robbery. He will always have his apologists and defenders because he is a symbol of white-on-black racism for the ignorant.

The first two O.J. trials (the criminal one, which he beat, and to a lesser extent the civil one, which he lost) really set the racial divide in this country. Black comedians and Black-American friends I know in general fully supported O.J. the 1990's. This time around, besides a few flakes, the news has been generally met with a smile.

In many ways, the first O.J. trial was overrated as "The Trial of the Century". It showed us how the MEDIA can sensationalize and influence the jury and court system. It gave birth to MEDIA people like Greta Van Susteren and "reality news" TV and all the "experts" and talking heads.

And, at risk of being labeled a bigot, it showed how Black Americans enjoy giving Free Passes (tm) to high-profile Black Americans (fast forward to 2008 Obama for another example).

Yes, you still have some that refuse to look at the details of this case, and claim the judge was "righting a wrong". I guess laymen love to make things so simple, since it makes a good story to end the sad chapter of O.J. Simpson.

In the end, there are more important things to worry about and focus on. Like Godzilla movie reviews.

AT&T cuts 12,000 jobs: so?

The talking heads (see three of them above) are adding to the media driven anxiety about the economy by making about AT&T's job cuts and previous job elimination slashes as another sign of the coming New Great Depression.

Have anyone of you actually called AT&T/Bellsouth's customer service for something? I would have fired them two years ago...

But that's besides the point. Companies in a capitalist society need to strive to streamline all the time. I guess the 12,000 + weren't a necessary cog on their giant machine anyway.

Yet AT&T is blaming all of this on people canceling landlines and going with cell phones due to people trying to save money and curtail spending. I mean, I know AT&T has an exclusive deal with Apple with the iPhone and everything, and makes hundreds of millions of dollars, but I'm sure the really have financial trouble.

Uh-huh.

Ya think AT&T is going to jump on the Bailout Bandwagon one of these days?

So now we will be taking care of the workers via unemployment. According to the MEDIA, it appears we're all going to be ending up logging into our state's unemployment web page sooner or later anyway. It's ironic, though...the Talking Heads and "experts" get paid to tell us that we're unemployed! Only in America!

Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Japan Bombing, WWII

Ever since I read John Hersey's book "Hiroshima" as a teenager, I knew every aspect of dropping two atomic bombs on civilian cities was wrong. I know the rational thought behind the reasons. I know what the apologists say. I have never been swayed, but I know the reasons. But here are the casualties of the radioactive beasts from the sky onto innocent civilians (something the defenders like to argue with me):
  • 140,000 = Hiroshima
  • 80,000 = Nagasaki
  • Plus Allied POW's in those cities
  • U.S. citizens in Japan
  • Chinese workers
  • Students from other countries
Agonizing cancer, orphaned children, animals, burns, disfigurements (so graphic I can't post here) birth defects push the totals even higher. Hiroshima's final total is 200,000. And you have issues with 9/11's 3,000+? Yeah, I know WWII costs millions of lives all around the world, and "this was the only way to avoid more casualties". Uh-huh.

Four more bombs were ready to go and more were set to wipe Japan off the face of the earth.

I also read history books, and was thoroughly schooled about the pros and cons of the atomic bomb. I've spoken in-depth with Americans who were alive then, and during my conversions, there has been a universal support of the bombing with no guilt at all. The racists statments usually follow the lack of remorse.

I know all the arguments supporting it...maybe for another post I will analyze both points of view and tackle the revisionist history.

For now, you can check out these videos:

Juan Miguel Arasa (JMA) Juan Arasa Florida

I worked with Juan Arasa for years in an office, and did some personal creative projects together, although we never completed them due to creative differences. We had drifted apart after we stopped working together.

Why?

I'd rather not say publicly or privately out of respect.

Suffice to say, Mr. Arasa came up to my office today to pick up some immigration papers from the Vice-President. I went to extend my hand to him. He begrudgingly shook it, and while walking fast down the hallway said that I "wounded his heart" and I was a "poor and ungrateful friend" for because I "have his phone number and e-mail" and did not invite him to my wedding two years ago. He was shaking his head no, and was seriously upset at me for numerous reasons. In a dramatic scene, I smiled, and said nothing, as he stormed out. Maybe he wanted me to protest, yell, or run after him.

The guy must be in his mid-to-late 40's by now, if not 50, but he sure as heck acted pretty immature.

Anyway, just posting this for two reasons:

1) To blow some steam and
2) Maybe one day Juan will search for his name, come across this post, and see how ridiculous he acted today...

A handful of former friends I know would testify how I am a bad guy, and that's fine. I have been accused of being many things in my life, so this is nothing new. If they want to feel like a victim of big, bad Damian (ha), that feeling of hurt is on them. If they don't want to objectively look at themselves in the mirror or accept any responsibility for anything, the burden is on them.

I extended my hand out of politeness, maybe to ask him how his son is doing now, and he stormed out like a drama queen. I'm not interested in his side of the story, just as he's not interested in mine. Instead of moving forward, he wanted throw his anger and pain on me.

Well, now that anger and pain is on public display on the Internet forever.

On a serious note, I want to tip my hat to another former friend of mine who came up to the office last year, Reggie Paul, who at least was very friendly, polite, and didn't focus on how bad of a person I allegedly am. Thanks for being civil to me, Reggie.

Juan Arasa can learn a lot from you.

For all other Damian-haters out there: if it helps you move on with your lives, feel free to come on down to the office and curse me out, or post negative blog messages. You'll be disappointed that I am not as miserable as you and I will not defend myself. I also won't be saying sorry, either. But help yourself if you think it will do you or me any better.

Ciao,
Damian Hospital

All of these headlines already happened already. Humanity will never change. People will always kill and rape and lie and avoid reality. Countries will always be at war or threaten war. Economies will always falter and boom. Stock markets crash. Presidents come and go. Sports...are sports.

It's fun to speculate, predict, and have an opinion, of course. It's important to be aware of current events and local and world news. But it's not fun to give into the panic and fear. It's like some unseen hands are building up a story-line leading to World War III or something. Yeah, right. It's like the MEDIA wants the United States- the world's last superpower- to crumble like the Roman Empire did.

Death, suffering, violence, warfare, conspiracies, disease, and injustice have all happened since the beginning of humanity, and will be there at the end. We can only accept these things, do our best to do more good than harm, and try to be happy.

Always put things in perspective; try not to have a skewed outlook on reality. It surely doesn't help that TV, internet, radio, newspapers, and other forms of MEDIA are trying to sell "The End is Nigh" to us everyday.

Boy, it seems that the Watchmen movie couldn't have come at a better time!
