Obama: No War Crimes for Bush Admin

As you can tell, I’ve not been focusing on President-Elect Obama. I just don’t feel right to prejudge, speculate, and nitpick every move he makes before he takes the oath of office (besides, you already made your decision, and now we have to live with it). Besides, I’ve been on the record several times expressing my fears of the Democrats in full control anyway.

I do want to bring up, however, a point I made during the review of his book Audacity of Hope. Obama says a lot without actually saying anything. He covers all angles, and ultimately always promises to discuss or think about an issue. To the left wing, his apologists, and the college types that worship him, it’s acceptable. Take a look at the latest flip-flop (too strong a term for my liberal readers, I know) about the prisoner torture (and not said, but one would think Dick Cheney’s alleged war profiteering would fall under “war crimes”):

“Two Obama advisers said there’s little—if any—chance that the incoming president’s Justice Department will go after anyone involved in authorizing or carrying out interrogations that provoked worldwide outrage.”

“In the United States, no. These things are not going to happen.”

Let’s see Obama’s actual (verbose and numerous) words earlier in the year, when he used the “Bush War Crime” angle to get votes:

What I would want to do is to have my Justice Department and my Attorney General immediately review the information that’s already there and to find out are there inquiries that need to be pursued. I can’t prejudge that because we don’t have access to all the material right now. I think that you are right, if crimes have been committed, they should be investigated. You’re also right that I would not want my first term consumed by what was perceived on the part of Republicans as a partisan witch hunt because I think we’ve got too many problems we’ve got to solve.

So this is an area where I would want to exercise judgment — I would want to find out directly from my Attorney General — having pursued, having looked at what’s out there right now — are there possibilities of genuine crimes as opposed to really bad policies. And I think it’s important– one of the things we’ve got to figure out in our political culture generally is distinguishing between really dumb policies and policies that rise to the level of criminal activity. You know, I often get questions about impeachment at town hall meetings and I’ve said that is not something I think would be fruitful to pursue because I think that impeachment is something that should be reserved for exceptional circumstances. Now, if I found out that there were high officials who knowingly, consciously broke existing laws, engaged in coverups of those crimes with knowledge forefront, then I think a basic principle of our Constitution is nobody above the law — and I think that’s roughly how I would look at it.

So, I’m sure Obama loyalists and computer minds find no contradictions in his words and lack of action to pursue war crime charges, but I do.

Nancy Pelosi didn’t want to set into motion impeachment proceedings, and the Democrats will not pursue a legit investigation to clear up some nagging questions we have about some of the fascist aspects of the President George Bush’s legacy. I thought a lot of info was revealed in the 9/11 Commission, and, based on Obama’s statements this year, I can see how many people believed we would receive the same for Bush’s war.

This was expected of couse. Instead of going on the hotseat and answer to the American people, maybe Bush will become Commissioner of Baseball instead, or have a late-night talk show. Or give speeches for $300,000 an hour.

Thank you, Democrat Powers-that-Be.

Just wanted the record to show this.

Obama will let free all those prisoner terrorists and apologize to the world. Bush didn’t commit any crime.

  2. Barry Allen says:

I think you’re jumping the gun, Damion. You should have kept your fingers shut.

The Obama plan is will do a fact-finding investigation over a rush to prosecution. The plan would never rule out future prosecutions, but simply would delay a decision on that matter until all essential facts can be unearthed.

    Sounds reasonable to me…

Between the time necessary for the investigative process and the array of policy problems Obama will face upon taking office, any decision on prosecutions probably would not come until a second Obama presidential term.

  3. Mike says:

Yeah, I don’t see how Obama’s spokesperson is contradicting anything Obama had said previously. Obama’s brain trust wants to form a commission on torture and call Bush officials as witnesses, but put off prosecutions until a second term. Economy first!

  4. Nancy says:

sorry barry i agree with damien on this one…

the constitution doesn’t work. the defenders of the law are a separate class, commonly called politicians, whose interests are not with the law, but with power, personal power.

  5. Anonymous says:

Pursue articles of impeachment as to whether President Bush has taken care that the laws be faithfully executed as to torture, electronic surveillance, and such other topics as the Congress may deem appropriate.

    Now.

  6. Sarah says:

Torture cannot be allowed to go unpunished, no matter how painful and humiliating its exposure might be to our country.

If George W. Bush and Dick Cheney authorized torture, as seems the case, then they are guilty of terrible crimes and must be brought to justice.

Can we not get a truth commission on this? Wasn’t that what Obama implied?

  7. New Yawk says:

Karl Rove needs to go to jail NOW, Do not pass Go, Do not collect $200. If I were Karl, I would not travel without a posse around me. I could see him getting snatched off the street in a white van with tinted windows and whisked away to some undisclosed location. Disappeared so to speak. Poetic justice?

It is ironic that Rudy Giuliani spent so much time and energy going after organized crime families in NY, yet was working with the largest organized crime group the world has ever seen. All the money those Mafia families accumulated pale compared to what this administration and associates has run off with.

  8. Kevin says:

I can't imagine that our newly elected officials, who believe that war crimes were committed, could simply ignore such a thing. To heal these wounds to our very fabric, this country needs to see those responsible for American war crimes brought to justice. We imprison more citizens than any country on the planet, yet our representatives would let known war criminals just get away with their crimes?

For the love of God & justice, I hope not.

I have faith Obama will get the facts first, and if there is evidence, start prosecuting. Frankly, Skew is off base here. Obama never denied this.

  9. DamianHospital says:

LOL…I guess the two quotes I posted straight from Obama’s camp were not clear enough, huh?

I guess it’s back to Godzilla movies for me.

    I’ll leave your messiah alone.

    But I’m watching.

  10. Barry Allen says:

But Obama didn’t technically promise to prosecute; he promised to have this AG to investigate.

This is not something that happens overnight anyway; this post is not justified…borderline yellow journalism.

  11. DamianHospital says:

Raise your hand if you really think the Dems are going to bring Bush/Cheney on charges.

    Go ahead…let me see.

That’s right, we all know it’s a fantasy.

The people can read the quotes for themselves, and make their own judgments.

  12. R.A.W. says:

Ive learned to expect nothing from the politicians so I will never be disappointed.

  13. DamianHospital says:

Heck, as long as you now see Obama as a politician, I’ve won, R.A.W.

  14. R.A.W. says:

    Theyre all politicians.
But I had to pull hard for him.
after 8 years of bush, and then running McCain against him?

    Man.

    Were in deep now.
I hope Obama does SOMETHING good for the people during this economic crisis, but I gotta admit, I just dont know.

I think if the country doesnt get on the right track within the next few years were going to see a seriously viable 3rd party emerge because of the overall dissatisfaction of people.

the main problem in my opinion is that our economy has been based on producing nothing.

like the whole united states of america can just be a nation of investors and we will all own a little piece of something that will go up in value and we wont have to work or save money to retire on because the stock market will take care of all of that.

It was all b.s. and now that myth is dying as it should.

  15. Damian says:

I think we could help unemployment by building a more energy-efficient car and better energy sources. We could be the world leader and produce something everyone needs and wants.
