Who won the debate? Joe Biden beats Sarah Palin

The Battle of Two Gimmicks that signifies nothing

Real simple folks:

Joe Biden was more aggressive, made things simple, answered the questions, attacked John McCain, and was reserved enough not to offend the Sarah Palin fans.

I won’t cover every point or topic since you probably already watched it or will watch online.

I will say Sarah Palin may have put up a fight, but let’s not confuse “holding her own” with actually winning. She memorized talking points, catchphrases, and the party line. She still has her appeal to conservative soccer and hockey moms around the nation, so McCain didn’t lose any steam, but he didn’t (or shouldn’t) gain anything either.

Although Biden wasn’t 100% factual, he still gave the impression that he knew what he was talking about. Heck, he looked more presidential than Obama. And that’s all that matters to viewers.

Palin started slow and was dodging questions.

I do commend her for going through the weeks of preparation for this, especially since she has no foreign policy experience or knowledge.

If I were her, I would have attacked Barack Hussein Obama’s patriotism a bit more. I know she mentioned Obama is putting a white flag up in Iraq, but perhaps if she made it more personal from a soldier’s point of view, it would have appealed to our emotions. She just wasn’t forceful enough.

Ultimately, this debate didn’t change my mind one way or the other. However, it was much more entertaining than Obama-McCain I, thanks to Joe Biden’s flair. He had style. She tried her best to recall all the preparation and to pretend to be a populist.

Sure, Sarah had some nice comebacks and good points about Obama’s voting record, but they came off as light punches. In her closing statement, she did hint that Republican voters should vote for the Party.

The bottom line is that the Democrat Obama will tax the corporations and rich guys that create our jobs. The bottom line is that healthcare for everyone sounds like a bureaucratic and expensive nightmare. The bottom line is that liberals aren’t as tough with foreign dictators as conservatives. On the other hand, Republicans believe in 100% unregulated free enterprise and the lower class and middle class be damned.

Anyway, great job by Biden, flaws and all. The way McCain’s campaign is falling (due to Obama’s campaign of “McCain = Bush”, therefore McCain is responsible for the economy and the war’s mistakes), I thought to myself how six years from now, people will be asking “Whatever happened to Sarah Palin?” Perhaps ten years from now, some VH-1 documentary may have a washed up celebrity, like Miley Cyrus reminisce about how Sarah took the nation by storm during the RNC, but then kinda faded out of existence.

But we’ll see…it’s not over yet. There are still some battleground states like Ohio, Missouri, and Iowa. There’s no telling how the turnout will be.

Debate Tally:

Obama-McCain I: Draw
Biden-Palin: Biden

  1. J. Jonah says:

Of COURSE Biden won. I had that headline set before the debate!

Palin? Palin? Give me a break.

  2. MD says:

Palin’s attractive but what’s up with the winks and the goofy faces? She’s like your buddy’s hot mom.

She refuses to answer the questions asked. She just seems out of her league, kind of like me stepping up to a podium with a note card and hoping to look good.

    That being said, McCain/Palin ‘08

  3. Gale says:

obviously, Biden has many years experience in government but Palin’s response stating her experiences in real life situations as a business owner and then moving up towards government life is impressive especially as a woman. She also did all this while maintaining a marriage and raising children.

  4. DamianHospital says:

    Final time:

Palin was trying to get people to take her seriously, and her orders were to spout the party line, mention Obama’s tracking record, appeal to conservatives, and most important- not to embarrass herself. She accomplished those goals, but still lost.

Biden looked like, sounded like, and acted like he was already vice president.

  5. Anonymous says:

On her ability to connect with the audience, and because the expectations for her were so pitifully low, Palin was the victor.

  6. Larry says:

I agree…her performance showed why Palin has energized the GOP base. Her directness had Biden playing defense for much of the 90 minutes and at times he looked confused about how to handle her competitive sparks and aggressive charges. Good thing for him he wasn’t a moose.

It wasn’t just style. The differences between them illustrate the cultural gap between the parties. No matter how many times Biden used the phrase “middle class,” it sounded like he was talking to it instead of from it. Spending half your life in Washington will do that to you.

Neither did any great harm to their cause, so the attention will return to the two men at the tops of their tickets. And Obama still has the clear advantage, because McCain’s campaign seems joined at the hip to the economy.

  7. DamianHospital says:

    Hey Larry,

I know you like the underdog and all (you actually thought the Mets had a chance this year)but according to Politico:

“Palin gave answers that were nonspecific, completely generic, pivoted away from the question at hand, or simply ignored it: on global warming, an Iraq exit strategy, Iran and Pakistan, Iranian diplomacy, Israel-Palestine (and a follow-up), the nuclear trigger, interventionism, Cheney’s vice presidency and her own greatest weakness.”

    And they are correct.

    It’s all misdirection.

  8. Anonymous says:

Washington power lawyer Robert Barnett helped Biden prepare.
His clients have included McDonald's Corporation, General Electric, Comcast, JM Family Enterprises, Sunbeam, Toyota, Deutsche Bank, MacAndrews & Forbes, Revlon, Coleman, First Alert, Rinnai, Southeast Toyota, ChoicePoint, and Toll Brothers, among others.

  9. Rayray says:

Palin is a very talented politician; she proved that again tonight. She’s just selling a failed product.

No one can stop the Obama Wave.

  10. Christopher says:

    Larry,

Palin showed up and didn’t completely fall on her pretty little face. If that’s what you call a win then your standard is pretty low.

She is clueless and that hockey mom garbage is not going to win over real voters on substance come Nov 4.

Biden clearly knocked her teeth out and stomped her guts out.

Everyone is afraid to say it except this site.

  11. Larry says:

Biden flat out LIED 15 times during the debate.

  12. Anonymous says:

she rehearsed and nearly scripted her way through the whole debate why even give her any credit for “holding her own”.

  13. JR says:

Sarah Palin is like wrasslin. Its pure entertainment, no substance. Its over folks. The Straight Talk Express was nice for a while, but come Nov 5th 2008 say goodbye to the right wing hawks that run Washington.

I cant wait when GW BUSH hasta show President-Elect Barack Hussein Obama around the White House and endorse him publicly..hahahaha!!!!!!

That’s why I’m voting for Obama!!

  14. J Bird says:

The decision by McCain to pull out of Michigan shows that he is doing nothing more than trying to avert a landslide.

  15. DamianHospital says:

Hey you all know this will be old news by the end of the day, right?

The House will approve the “Rescue Bill” by the end of the day.

  16. Anonymous says:

thought the debate was 60% joe and 40% palin. he was more aware of things about war, and how much it costs america.
they both tried hard and really did not go for one another's throats like hilary and barack did. they also spoke of how hard families have it now and not being able to take care of their family members. palin said she knows how people feel about babies
with learning disabilities. biden said he lost his wife and children in a car accident and he choked when he said he did not know if one
child would make it. so the candidates showed some human
part of their lives. we spend trillions of $$ & that has to change.

  17. Larry says:

    Again-

Sarah Palin cleaned Joe Biden’s clock as he lied time and time again- 15 times according to my count-proving he is the dumbest person in the entire universe, and a stooge congressman- the type of person whom we all hate.

  18. DT says:

All she proved last night was shes McCain’s personal kiss ass. How many times did she call him a “Maverick”?
Mavericks are independent thinkers, lone dissenters; non-conformists or rebels. Or they can be a lonely calf. Hmm…lonely calf, yeah, I guess that is John McCain.

  19. Anonymous says:

I agree with Larry: were you guys watching the same debate I was?

Sarah Palin once again put the brakes on McCain’s poll decline and reinvigorated the GOP.

  20. Anonymous says:

Get used to saying “President Obama”. You’ll be saying it a lot.

    Let me help:
    “President Obama”
    “President Obama”
    “President Obama”
    “President Obama”
    “President Obama”

30 days out from the election and McCain is defending states like IND and NC from the onslaught of the Obama Movement.

  21. Cindy says:

much more entertaining than obama/mccain. maybe these two should be running instead!

  22. Anonymous says:

They pulled out of Michigan and lost a debate in the same day, and people are talking like it was a good day for the McCain campaign.

  23. billy says:

    no substance just slogans

  24. Anonymous says:

Palin was likeable, warm, knowledgeable, and well informed on every issue contrary to all the predictions of this blog. I predict she will connect better with swing voters in the West and Midwest…the world is bigger than South Florida.

  25. Anonymous says:

    Nope…

    Fact:

It’s unlikely this debate will change many minds, and that’s a clear win for Obama-Biden at this point.

Fact: Obama is up by 4-5 on the National Average, and all battle ground states by a wide-margin.

Fact: The economy is the #1 issue.

  26. Anonymous says:

Only a person who is completely blinded by ideology can believe that in preparation, command of the facts, command of the issues, and knowledge of the foreign policy challenges facing this nation that Sarah Palin won this debate and as a choice for vice president.

  27. 6 says:

Biden still lied the whole night. But I guess he sounded “vice-presidential”? Puh-lease!
