Review: Phil Hendrie Radio Show 10/22/08

I wanted to give the new Phil Hendrie a spin, especially since RAW had hooked me up with some old Phil tapes. I know RAW doesn’t think Phil is relevant anymore, and since I’ve been listening to the radio recently, I wanted to see how bad Phil’s show really was.
How the mighty have fallen.
Don’t get me wrong: it’s an OK show. It’s just that it can’t compare to his old shows, and it simply is not FUNNY. He’s too calm, too balanced, and lacks innovation. In short, it was a boring show.
Phil spent most of the show talking about Obama, and for voters to be smart and not to listen to the talking heads. A large section of the show was devoted to an unemployed worker who called in. Phil also talked about the definition of socialism for a long time, and even had a caller who lived in Sweden promote socialism. There was some focus on how the MEDIA likes to focus on Sarah Palin’s expensive wardrobe, as opposed to the other players in this political game.
I laughed twice, but my laughter was a quick giggle: He used his veteran voice and called himself to complain about Obama saying he was a better dancer than McCain. Secondly, he played the now infamous Obama robocall, where the person on the recording is named something that sounds like Jerry Watermelon.
In terms of satire, parody, comedy, and the passive-aggressive social commentary that made Phil Hendrie the most creative voice on the radio waves? None of that was here.
He pretty much had a show by giving his take on linked DrudgeReport articles.
Phil has passed his prime.
I’ll be passing on any new Phil Hendrie shows.
Maybe one day, we shall see the return of the real Phil, with all of his sock puppet voices.

You see, Phil? All these years I’ve tried to help you … I’ve tried to SAVE your career, and here you’ve gone and lost another fan. Great job, Phil. Great job.
If Phil would let me play the drums again on his show, you know …
… Excuse me. The spliff was calling me.
Anyway, like, I really offer a lot to the Phil Hendrie show….
As a gay man and a gay journalist, I am sensitive to attacks. Phil has been kind enough to let me on his show a few times, and as a gay man and a gay journalist, I feel I need to defend him.
When I came out of the closet two weeks ago during my job interview with the N.Y. Times, I really felt like … sigh. I felt like I was out on a limb, all alone, naked, with my hands tied behind my back and a blindfold on.
That’s how I felt. As a gay man, and a gay journalist.
Now, fast forward to now … and I’ve got new gig, and you’re ripping Phil because he’s talking politics.
HELLO. You don’t have to be a gay man or gay journalist to know there is a Presidential ELECTION going on! What ELSE is he supposed to talk about?
My editors at the Times have me on the trail of Obama … and thank GOD, cause as a gay man and a gay journalist, I find he’s a real challenge for me.
It’s tough to look at him and … uh, you know, uh … let’s just say I’ve got this mini-journalist in my underwear, and….
Okay! That’s enough!
What?
Uh, Phil?
A-ha ha. A-ha ha.
If you’d like, a-ha ha, I could, uh, a-ha ha, INTRODUCE Mr. Hospital to a, uh, a-ha ha, one of my, uh, friends, a-ha ha, who was recently released from this facility and is, a-ha ha, reacclimating himself to society, uh, rather well.
My friend Harold. Yes. He told me a wonderful, a-ha ha, story about a 12-year-old girl he, uh, a-ha ha….
Okay … okay!
Now do you see why I’ve gone with a more balanced show? Can you imagine dealing with all these voices in my head … all the time?!?
You know, Phil, I agree with Mr. Hospital and his ascertions about your show. It IS more boring, and you need to do something about it.
Now, my son, Jayson J. Del Monaco, is available for singing engagemets. He is HIGHLY entertaining, Phil, and will bring huge numbers to your ratings.
I mean, considering you’re down to only 81 affiliates, when you used to be on hundreds … it couldn’t hurt….
Phil was the best at one point.
Now hes doing the kind of show that he used to make fun of.
I really dont get it.
I think he returned to radio after his wife took everything from him in a divorce, ans hes just doing this because he needs the money.
its a different era.
this series of posts on this page is funnier than the show phil does now.
Phil is a freakin genius.
I loved his show so much until he switched over to right wing radio..( boring )
You are right he used to make fun of this type of radio.
