Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews removed as MSNBC anchors

For as much negative press the far right MEDIA gets (like Rush Limbaugh and FOX News), the left wingers on MSNBC- Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews have been somewhat more tolerated because they were entertaining and hated George Bush so much.

But their antics have finally run their course.

This is one incident that viewers complained about:

Here’s Chris showing his agenda on “Hardball”:

Thanks to Olbermann’s sarcastic and subjective views, not to mention Matthews’ anger outbursts, they have been removed from covering live political events.

People can cry about “censorship” or “Republican conspiracies” or “ratings” (MSNBC has been getting killed with Olbermann as anchor) but the bottom line is that:

A news anchorman and a commentator at a Political National Convention are supposed to maintain the illusion of being neutral and objective. CNN’s Wolf Blitzer is a PROFESSIONAL moderator. Chris Matthews has made it clear that he is an Obama fan, and did his best to attack Hillary Clinton all the time. Now, if he was just a blogger, like I am- that’s fine. But he’s not.

If Olbermann wanted to bash Republicans on his show “Countdown”, that’s fine, after all it’s an opinion show. If he wanted to run a comic routine a la “The Daily Show”, and make fun of John McCain- that’s fine.

But do not—repeat— do not “call out” the GOP and say that they are making propaganda videos at their own convention. It’s uncalled for. It may be true, but it is unprofessional. It’s being biased. NOTHING the GOP does could EVER please Olbermann. If you are a NEWS REPORTER, you can’t take shots at McCain, take shots at Sarah Palin, or accuse the Republicans of controlling FOX News, or hint how Bush is part of some O’Reily conspiracy to call Obama a Muslim.

Could you imagine Peter Jennings or Dan Rather doing that?

Olbermann was an influential figure with ESPN. He made sports become “sports entertainment”. In other words, he did more damage than positive when it came to his sarcasm and opinions while he was ANCHOR. The man has a history of rubbing people the wrong way in every job he’s held because he’s so pompous and condescending. He is very sharp and quick and biting, and has the ability to reduce someone’s image to crap in 3 seconds. He is the very definition of a TALKING HEAD.

Matthews is a former Democratic Party insider. Olbermann was a washed up sportscaster. They both went on public record to attach Bush and the GOP (Matthews on “Hardball”, Olbermann- everywhere). They are not objective.

If MSNBC wants to start from scratch and try to gain a measure of respectability (not to mention ratings) the station needed to give viewers the perception that their news anchors are being objective. I agree with their removal.

FYI, I loved watching Chris’s Hardball during the O.J. trial, but I never enjoyed Olbermann’s sports talk once he became “big”.

The first time I really noticed Olbermann was when he hosted Fox Baseball’s game of the week, before Jeanie-in-a-bottle took over. He seemed okay.

Later on, I heard about his MSNBC program on clips played on talk radio shows like Laura Ingraham. I finally watched his Countdown show … and I was pretty shocked.

When he was covering baseball, there wasn’t an obvious bias — just a bent towards sensationalism. But … damn … I didn’t realize how biased he was until he got into the world of politics.

Talk about skewed — there were a few times I wished I could hit the escape button on that show, rewind the film, and try to rescan it. The clips I heard on the radio were unbelievably bad.

And now, the coup de grace — Olbermann and Dan Patrick, former ESPN Sportscenter hosts, were back together again … doing NFL halftime highlights on NBC.

That was some nice humble pie for a man who takes himself WAY too seriously.

He sure does take himself too seriously.

Correct, he wasn’t biased on SportsCenter, just too sarcastic for me. I wasn’t ready for ESPN to become MTV when it came to sensationalizing everything.

Dan Patrick was more understated, but he too loved the sound of his voice. “Whiff…whiff…whiff..” The games were reduced to 15 second soundbites and “webgems” on the highlight reel. Great for ratings, bad for traditionalists.

Their voice overs frankly heralded a new era of sports coverage.

Like Beavis and Butthead, the coverage was in a way entertaining and revolting at the same time.

But like Petter Gammons, they always picked the hot and young team, as opposed to the sure thing (The Yankees had won 13 years straight.)

I don’t think that the anchors should upstage the actual show.

  3. r.a.w. says:

if objective respectability doesnt get ratings, then why would we expect these networks to try to be objective?

    look at fox news.
everybody knows they are just a commercial for the republican party and they are number one in the ratings.

so if some other station decides to launch a partisan propaganda network from the other side, aren’t they just following the fox news success model?

and if olberman of mathews should be fired or taken off the air for being too biased, then shouldnt everybody on fox news also be fired too?

the media is generally stupid, and I dont usually watch them or take them seriously.

I remember when John Kerry was running and I heard Hannity say that the democrats were handing out crack to get people to vote for john kerry.

nobody fired him, or screamed that he was too biased.
so why should anybody else be fired for being too biased.
    not to be too partisan,
but I cant help but notice the double standard on this one.
the media died a long time ago.
and fox news has shown that being the opposite of objective gets you ratings.
I think we can all expect the democrats to start feeling entitled to do the same thing that the republicans have already done.

Im not praising it or condemning it, but fair is fair.
and i think we are going to see more of this from everyone because the media has been dead for quite some time and they will do anything for ratings.

  4. Rush to Excellence says:

Brokaw and Brian Williams got Olbermann and Matthews removed from the anchor chairs. They didn’t want to be associated with their bias. News anchors are supposed to be objective, and those two aren’t.

When Sarah Palin started bashing the MEDIA during her speech at the RNC, the crowd chanted “NBC! NBC!” Not “CBS!” or “CNN!”

That spoke volumes to NBC’s bias — Brokaw and Williams weren’t going to take it anymore.

  5. DamianHospital says:

I agree, Rush. {never thought I’d say that.)

Brokaw and Brian Williams are pros.

R.A.W.: I am an idealist. I don’t believe that ratings should influence coverage, and journalism and reporting should always strive to maintain neutral coverage- like wikipedia does.

Look anything goes on O’Reily Factor and the other conservative shows, but covering a National Convention is “news”, not an opinion piece, like MSNBC treated it as.

  6. r.a.w. says:

maybe its because I just listen to the radio and dont watch television, but im starting to believe that there is no such thing as objectivity at all.
because even when the news reports facts the facts they choose to report or not to report are just based on whatever point of view they are trying to promote, no matter who it is.
sometimes I think its more honest to see somebody’s bias right out in the open where theyre not trying to hide it.
and all of these objective people are either apathetic androids that just dont care, or a bunch of liars.( albeit very professional )

just once Id like to see a dan rather or a brokaw slap back a few shots of bourbon before they get on the air so we can see what these so-called “objective” guys really think.

FYI to Chris Matthews: Sarah Palin has been talked about as a possible VP choice many times in conservative mags since the beginning of this year. Bill O'reilly has discussed it before and Vogue did a story on her in the spring and EVEN THEY mentioned it.
just a couple of the numerous articles:
