John McCain Speech

Well, last night I had time to see Cindy McCain read the teleprompter, and John McCain speak.

Cindy actually covered things to show how human her husband is, but my problem was the speech writers didn’t fit her personality; the actual content seemed over her head, and her delivery was bad. She planted the seed of sleep into my head.

The best part of the night was the John McCain video tribute, which showed his long history and family. Videos like that make me feel guilty for making fun of him. In many ways, I wish I knew that younger version of John McCain, as opposed to a man past his physical and mental prime now. But one just has to look at his mother (95+) to see how strong he may be.

And I just wanted to say one something else about this race: as you know the DailySkew does not endorse either candidate (although during the primaries I was hoping Obama would beat Hillary Clinton). I did predict that Senator McCain would become President McCain only because I enjoy predicting things (I do it on the baseball site all the time).

The reason why I have not made up my mind (I suspect I will wait until election day), is because of the MEDIA. My natural instinct is to distrust arrogant people with charisma (Obama) who are celebrated by the MEDIA. Obama appeared on around 7 covers of Time this year, he’s all over the grocery store magazines, the under 35 crowd has fallen in love with him, he’s “cool”, he’s the Second Coming of Martin Luther King, Jr, etc.

The irony is- I wanted everyone to do this when he was running against both Clintons. Then Reverend Wright hit. And I began to see how Obama is a salesman, like every other politician. I do believe he wants to bring change, but it is simply a platform (gimmick). Same for McCain.

Here’s another instinct of mine- I naturally root for the underdog. So when MEDIA coverage for Obama generally is positive and he gets covered 70% of the time vs McCain 30% (The Obama World Tour Circus), that gets me pissed off.

As for the actual speech itself, it was more of the same as we’re used to seeing; he’s just not a fiery orator. His criticisms of Obama’s tax plan are pretty much outright fables. I fell asleep towards the end.

The polls now show a 50-50 deadlock, something which I believe will stay until election night (with the usual weekly changes). For all the experts and Joe Water Cooler moaning about how Sarah Palin was the WRONG pick, she seemed to have closed the gap for now.

McCain stood up last night and saif thr Republicans were wrong. He’ll work with Americans. Didn’t you listen to a thing? Otr do you weant the media and celebrities to influence you?

I, too, tend to root for the underdog … and I’ve always been suspicious about how the MEDIA and most people I’ve worked with over the years tend to support the Democrats and criticize Republicans.

I get sick of hearing the same old tired cliches … but I usually politely smile and keep my mouth shut, since arguing is a complete waste of time.

I picked an argument recently, b/c I was tired (my Yar’s Revenge shield was at zero) … while I managed to get the guy to agree at the end that politicians are all the same, regardless of party affiliation, it still got me nowhere.

I mean, when I see people who are SO excited about Obama, as if they just prayed Jesus into their hearts at a Pentecostal Revival … my instinct tells me this is wrong.

I, too, am undecided this election. I haven’t decided whether I’ll throw my vote away on an independent candidate the way I did in 1992 and 2000, or support a major party candidate like I did in 1996 and 2004.

I’ll probably vote for Palin. She’s the only one who seems somewhat relatable. And the MEDIA has SUCCEEDED in putting her in the underdog role!

“She’s from Alaska … She was mayor of a small town … she has five kids … how can she handle the job?”

How did Bill Clinton handle it, being from Pondunk Arkansas? Amazing how that wasn’t questioned at the time!

And if having kids is a problem, I guess we can’t vote for Obama, either. After all, how does he have time to be a father AND leader of the free world? That’s a tougher job than VP!

Damn — I may vote for McCain SIMPLY b/c of the insane bias!

Obama better kill McCain in the first debate, if he wants my vote. He needs to make McCain look like an Alzheimer’s patient if he wants my vote.

McCain is the underdog going into the 1st debate. It’s like when The Rock in his prime beat Ric Flair, who was way past his prime.

Hopefully McCain loses his temper and distracts people from realizing he lost (DQ).

Regarding his memory, I think anyone would have problems remembering how they voted on a certain bill, especially when bills of today are piggy packed with dozens of other things.

I wish he’d drive the Straight Talk Express and explain to us why he votes against veteran benefits so much (he’s convinced he doesn’t).

I think technical details about the economy and energy are beyond both of them, so it should be interesting if they have to defend “their” plans come debate night.
