China Olympic Opening Ceremony: FAKE
I promised I wouldn’t cover the 2008 China Olympic Opening Ceremony. But I couldn’t resist…only because my co-workers were GUSHING about this great ceremony.
The little girl that the world fell in love with was FAKE. The real girl won the contest fair and square but wasn’t good-looking enough.
To fill empty seats during the actual games, the Chinese have been drafting large numbers of yellow-shirted ‘fans’, who clap and cheer equally for opposing teams.
Read here about how China tricked the world. Shame on all of you for giving China the benefit of the doubt.
By the way, I *know* how it’s easier to stage fireworks, and how fireworks really did go off” “The faked fireworks were actually set-off at the stadium, but because of potential dangers in filming the display live from a helicopter, viewers at home were shown a pre-recorded, computer-generated shot” blah blah blah blah.
I know what The Apologist says, “28 footprints outside of the stadium were actually lit and real – only the *shot shown on TV* was fake”. I find it ironic that many technical oriented people LOVED the ceremony and will defend deception for eternity. If you want to waste time or energy defending it, or minimizing it, or lecture about how China is really good for the global economy blah blah blah blah go right ahead.
F A K E“After several tests, we decided to put Lin Miaoke on the live picture, while using Yang Peiyi’s voice. The reason for this is that we must put our country’s interest first. We had to make that choice. It was fair both for Lin Miaoke and Yang Peiyi…. We combined the perfect voice and the perfect performance.”

Okay, I’ll take the bait:
There weren’t “fake” fireworks. Only ONE “fake” shot.
1) It’s almost impossible for helicopter to catch up with the fireworks
2) It’d be very dangerous for the helicopter to be there in the first place
Shut up now.
all fireworks were authentic
Doesn’t really seem like a hoax or malicious deception to me, more like a matter of practicality.
You offend me, and your ignorance saddens me.
1) Their reasons for not endangering the pilot or helicopter are pretty reasonable
2) There actually were a lot of fireworks set off
3) They don’t seem to be trying very hard to keep it a secret, although they clearly didn’t want it known before the fact. This makes sense since it was likely much more enjoyable to viewers than if they had known ahead of time the fireworks were CGI.
4) Viral marketing must drive you bonkers.
5) Clearly the Chinese are really lying about the fireworks being fake and CGI to hide their advanced “Super-Bright firework technology” from the rest of the world!
Hmmm. . .from what I understand, the fireworks as depicted in the footage were really there and happened as shown in the footage. . .it’s just that the footage wasn’t actually of the fireworks, because it would have been too tricky and risky to actually film them. So it’s not a deception as in it was showing something that doesn’t exist; it’s more like those artists’ renditions of the surface of Neptune or wherever, where the artist looks at photos of what’s really there and then draws it from a different angle that the spacecraft can’t really see.
Not much of a lie or twisting of reality, really.
Now, if they had shown all those fireworks going off and never actually even had any fireworks in real life yet were pretending that they had, that would be a different story. Even that, though, wouldn’t be any worse than many other examples of showmanship.
I agree with Damian. I think the real reason was that they wanted a guaranteed nice image. Maybe a shot from above would have shown the notorious smog. Maybe it was cheaper using CGI than putting cameras in the air. Maybe at that distance the image would have been too hazy in real life. I don’t know, but I am suspicious of the “danger” excuse. Haven’t the Chinese been shooting off fireworks for some 5000 years now? I’d think they have it down to a precise art and be able to avoid hitting a helicopter hovering some distance away.
the main reason being given by the Chinese is that the smog made filming the fireworks live impossible, and they had provided the pre-made footage to the broadcasters just in case.
The almost three billion people viewing the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics apparently have been tricked. While international consumers have dealt with a massive influx of poor quality, counterfeit—and poisonous—Chinese goods in recent years, the People’s Republic of China has spared little expense in its latest artificial export: ‘fake fireworks’.
‘Child on camera should be flawless in image’
Sounds like a fortune cookie!
DIFFERENT CULTURE. I THOUGH THE SKEW WAS MATURE
You were expecting honesty from a big media event?!
Come on. That’s not how the world runs.
If this were simply a matter of some faked photos, it might not say that much about the society whence it came, however: there were promises of “openness,” but visitors and journalists found blocked internet access; there were fake volunteers who really are military or PSB; faked fans brought in to fill empty seats; faked ages of gymnasts, and maybe most importantly internet sites that contain(ed) information concerning the gymnasts’ ages, or clips of the fireworks, suddenly are no longer available. That presents a more complete picture without even considering the dissidents, poor residents, and others who also disappeared from Beijing.
Recently discussed this with some people and came across this blog. I love how many of your comments are defending the fireworks and still completely ignoring the yellow shirts or the downright cruel omission of a girl who wasn’t cute enough to represent China. Rather convenient.
Poor Yang Peiyi.
