Mr. Lonely: Bobby Vinton vs Victor Wood vs Akon
The original, by Bobby Vinton. #1 in 1964 song charts. The song is about a soldier alone in a war without anyone to talk with, with no word from back home.
Victor Wood popularized “Mr. Lonely” in the Philippines. Every Filipino knows it, young or old, and they can sing it on request on their karaoke machines.
Akon created a renewed interest in the song with his modern remix. It actually features remixed voice samples from the original. Akon’s version has nothing to do with being away from at war.

I like akon version!!!
Akon is the one who “bastardized” this song, shut up!
my great-great-great-great grandmother’s grandmother was in the audience when bobby vinton did the original
gustong gusto ko tong kantang VICTOR WOOD pag naririnig ko napapaluha ako, naaalala ko yung childhood time ko, Sana makatagpo ako ng loner na personality na tulad ko yung maiintindihan nya mga moods ko…
Why do the originals always make the remix version sound like trash? :-/
THANKS to Bobby Vinton for this GREAT song!
nayarin ibaga yun misteryoso so bilay ko, pero diad katuwaan et maermen ak labat…
dont be mess wit my boy akon
Wow..I never knew the Akon song was a cover.
u can’t blame Akon: He made this song great
I prefer Vinton over Akon’s version, although I agree that he did polish it and bring it back, but he transformed it from one of the greatest war songs, to a song about getting dumped by some chick. Personally in my opinion Akon has BASTARDIZED this song.
Polished it? I heard akon’s version and to me it sounds like he is mocking the original by making it sound like the vocals were sung by the chipmunks… Definite bastardization of a classic… These hip hop artists should come up with their own tunes..
Actually it’s funny you say that because when I first heard Akon’s version a couple of years ago, my first reaction was that he was mocking Bobby Vinton by speeding up his voice…like Akon was trying to say…out with the old, in with the new. It wasn’t offensive to me, though. It was more like…60’s love songs have no place in today’s hip hop world.
Victor Wood…nakakatuwa talagang pakinggan ang mga ganitong awitin….naaalala ko nong bata pa ako, lagi itong pinatutugtog sa radio. nong kahirapan ng buhay namin noon e lagi ganito tugtugin….
