Skew Review: Métamorphose File/Folder Renamer

The real scoop about Métamorphose

By Damian Hospital, 12-03-2007

Métamorphose is a free tool which can rename all of your files or folders.

Who needs this?

From a computer novice who has uploaded a bunch of pictures from a digital camera, but wants to organize them, to a major corporation who realized they just indexed a few million files incorrectly; from a music enthusiast who wants to make some sense and put his/her 20,000 MP3 songs in order, to a law firm that needs to add a case ID# prefix to 80,000 PDFs.

I think the following types of people can greatly benefit from Métamorphose:

  • Users who need to change the filenames, and don’t have the time to rename a file or folder one-at-a time.
  • People who work in the digital imaging, document management, PC gaming, litigation industries, and probably a whole bunch more.
  • Those who want to organize their MP3 files and directories.
  • Anyone who wants to change tags in their files or folder properties.

Métamorphose can perform many different renaming functions, such as inserting, replacing, changing character length, removing, resequencing, remove spaces, add underscores/dashes/any character, change lowercase/uppercase, change Date and Time, change extensions, adding number or text as a prefix or suffix, use MP3 tags, retrieve proper character encoding from id3 tags, renumbering .mp3’s in a different order (good for mixes), and much more.

The good news is, there are no file type limitations that I know of- it works with PDF, JPG, BMP, TIFF, DBF, JPE, TXT, CSV, XLS, DOC, MP3, MP4, EXE- you name it.

The edge Métamorphose has over other renaming programs is that it can name main and subfolders as well.

Métamorphose can GET YOU OUT OF JAMS and help with indexing – for your own personal use or for commercial use.

I’d recommend getting the Windows Version if you’re not experienced with Linux/Python source code (for geeks).

If there is one flaw, the interface is kind of bare, and you need to read the help files to learn how to use it, and at first it’s not that intuitive. But I’m sure you can learn by reading the instructions and the creator can help you in Forums.

I’ve worked with the creator of Métamorphose for many years, and can vouch to his dedication to this free open-source software. He likes feedback. In fact, he told me I could rip his product to shreds if I really thought it was bad. He’s the type of person who just believes in creating an efficient product, and is totally into open source.
