The chilling home-made video shows a young man staring out of a blood-red screen, pointing a gun and declaring: “I, as a natural selector, will eliminate all who I see unfit.”
Hours after posting his “massacre manifesto” on the YouTube website, a gunman presumed to be Pekka-Eric Auvinen, 18, walked into Jokela High School in southern Finland and shot dead five boys, two girls and the headmistress with a .22 calibre handgun. About a dozen more were wounded.
The shooting marked the arrival in peaceful small-town Finland of US-style high-school massacres, a phenomenon spurred by the internet and the isolation of a troubled teenager.
Tony:
One of the questions raised in the Batman comic is whether or not the
villains would exist if Batman existed.
I suppose one could ask whether these narcissistic fools would exist
if comics and movies depicting super villains existed.
That somehow relates to the whole freedom on the internet thing, and
whether regulations are needed.
This technology — it’s like Pandora’s Box opened. Great power and no
responsibility.
I don’t know anything about this kid … but I DO know he was able to
shoot a video and post it on YouTube. He is a connoisseur of modern
technology.
Damian:
I agree with everything you said, so I’m just thinking aloud now about this:
Spring Heeled Jack existed in the 1830’s in England.
In the 1930’s Hitler used the printing presses/MEDIA to spread evil
The Mad Bomber, 1940’s-1950’s in NY.
It could be that mentally ill people, who by their nature are prone to being anti-social, use whatever technology is available during their era. One could say that Jack and Bomber were influenced by folk tales and old time movie serials, respectively. Hitler/Goebbels may have been inspired by Lenin’s posters in Russia, but took it to an unprecedented level of propaganda.
I wonder when the Earth had a few million people, if there was a Neanderthal man who vandalized the cave drawings, or killed kids with a stone while they slept. If YES, it means it’s in our genetic code, and the technology is just “copy and paste” from one era to the next. If NO, it could mean that this 6.6 billion people Earth we currently live in:
1) may be prone to more variances of genetic defects/illnesses/difficulty to judge right from wrong
2) is different than the past because it has a technology where the spread of ideas and innovative ways for violence and sex is instantaneous.
What makes humanity unique is that children are born into the “cumulative” society, where they thankfully don’t have to build civilization from scratch each time, and the stories, myths, books, movies, music, religions, habits, social norms, etc. are passed and taught from one generation to another (although some things become forgotten).
Where LME comes into play: terrorists using Google Earth for targets, blogs used for manifestos, cell phone videos capturing sex in the high school classrooms, Youtube used for everything, illegal file sharing and bootlegging becoming social acceptable, instant porn or gay men who will meet you one-two clicks away, etc.
Since technology itself, like money, is not evil on its own, the people have to be held responsible, but they are not since we live in LMEarth. By people, I mean the creators of the technology [generally for the motivation of making a profit, under the guise of the thrill of invention or knowing the unknowable to benefit mankind], and the powers-that-be who make the decisions about marketing and producing the product. Since Joe Public is a sheep, he shouldn’t have the right to think and choose on his own for such technologies, because Joe Public is doing a bad job “self-regulating” craigslist and youtube, among other decisions. Back in the day, the fear of God/religion was used to control Joe Public to stop him from committing unhealthy acts (farm animals). In today’s era, religion/God has been *generally* “exposed” for a while, almost like how wrestling or Santa Claus has been exposed. So the fear of Hell is not truly there for Joe Public, and Joe Public doesn’t want to HEAR about going to Hell, which has been downgraded to a cartoon world, like South Park or when Woody Woodpecker when to “Hell” and pecked Satan’s butt.
Finally- the motivation for technology thousands of years ago was 1) survival 2) protection 3) conquering 4) efficiency, and 5)luxury; whereas TODAY, the big corporations just focus on LUXURY (Hummers, electronics, I-Phone, PS3, Google/Microsoft/Yahoo data/information wars, digital flat screen TV, satellite radio, etc.) under the front of “efficiency/survival/protection” since most of the basic stuff has apparently already been made- the cumulative history/world we live in.
My problem with our government using billions to fund a war is that perhaps that money could have been used to advance technology that could focus on our survival and protection, like weather control to help drought or something that can weaken a hurricane, or ways to cure major diseases. It seems like the Christian-Right (just to pick on someone) who are against us “playing God” with stem cells and nature are okay with their non-energy efficient homes, soccer-mom SUVs, eating out every night because no one has “time” to “make” food (uhm…microwave, anyone?), etc.
Tony:
Excellent job thinking out loud!
I hate to say this, but there needs to be more regulation, or at the very least, more done to prevent what is happening.
The ISP’s are the gatekeepers — they need to control the information superhighway. Government should, uh, motivate them.
Every day you look at Craigslist, you see the Mad Bombers of our current generation, dealing with their Oedipus Complex (Thank you, Dr. Brussels) in the most deranged fashion possible.
The internet seems to allow for more mentally deranged fools gaining access to fulfilling their twisted desires.
In regards to the copy and paste genetic code thing: we do know that, basically, the same nine Enneagram personality types repeat, over and over and over, with variations for levels of mental, physical, and spiritual health. That theme will continue to be explored in the Dream Seeker Universe.

And as Buddha said, the roots of suffering in the human condition have always existed and will continue to exist if one doesn’t attempt to stop the cycle of ignorance….
Yeah, you know where I’m coming from with regulation- you know I don’t believe in Big Government because the Government is run by LME. But I want innocent people to be protected by the scum of the earth. I don’t want people to be TEMPTED. I want to be lead by a philosopher-king!!
Heck, I’m glad my credit card won’t let me gamble, get HGH, or buy webcam minutes with pornstars online! I thank the credit card company for taking my choice away from embracing my suffering. Seriously!
I remember in Sociology 101, the teacher asked, “Does life imitate art, or does art imitate life?”
A huge debate ensued.
There was a study by Bandura that showed kids mimicking a clown TV show, which featured hitting the clown. So there is no doubt learned behavior from TV is a reality. I also read a study where violent crimes between the races increased if there was a high-profile boxing match between a black man and a white man.
But if you guys are going waaaay back before TV, like the cro-magnon era- I truly have no idea if early homo sapiens had issues like this.
Then again, if you look at the Bible, the same issues occurred. Perhaps humanity doesn’t change at all.
Good stuff guys,
interesting thoughts.
But its not so much that the internet gives power to crazed gunmen and other dangerous freaks, its the public themselves.
If some miscreant posts something disturbing on youtube, its just another post – but if that same person kills a bunch of people and gets on the news, then all of the sudden everybody needs to see what the deranged gunman posted and it can get a million hits overnight.
These people dont have any real power just because they have a forum.
These people are well aware of the fact that they dont have any real power in thier world which is part of the reason they choose to go out and blow away a bunch of people in the first place.
The loaded gun in their hand is the power they choose to wield.
They do it for the rush of power.
Are they crazy ? of course they are.
but i think that allowing everybody to openly post anything they want on the internet is a great way of determining who to keep an eye on and possibly apprehending them beforehand.
Censuring the internet just drives these people more underground and out of our sight, and whether we like it or not, these people are real and in our world.
As much as i dont like it, its the public interest and number of hits that decide who gets to be famous.
The wrong people getting famous but who is to blame for that?
Its the rubbernecking herd. Its the same idiots that slow all the traffic down because they need to get a GOOD look at the wreck on the side of the highway, making everybody behind them late to their appointments.
Its not the internet that creates the power as much as it is the public choosing to pay attention to the ramblings of some talentless exhibitionist who will do anything to be famous rather than pay attention to their own real lives which they are apparently to bored with to care about. They see a wreck, hear about a murder, and all of the sudden they have something interesting to pay attention to.
These are also the same people who read a lot of tabloids and participate in office gossip.
I did not even know about this story until i saw it on your blog.
Im out of the loop and thats the way i want it.
I try to ignore whats going on in “the world”
To me the news is silly. Its anything to get ratings, and the net is no better, no worse. Sure a public access tv station wouldnt put this guy on and the net would, but you guys would also have a hard time getting on tv, not to mention the expense.I like the net because it can tell the truth about whats wrong with us better than more regulated forms of media precisely because its anything goes, unfortunately were also going to see a lot of things we would rather not acknowledge, but whether we like it or not, these people are real and in our world.
We need to see them in order to stop them.
Thanks, R.A.W…
You know, Tony and I have been posting the negatives about the Internet a lot recently, so I’m glad you brought up the other side.
People like you, me, Tony, and Dark Truths certainly can filter fact from fiction, and thus the Internet seems to be custom-made for us. Having free information at our fingertips, and having the ability to read and search what we want is truly a great freedom.
As we know, mainstream (print, TV)MEDIA’s sole intent is to make a buck. On the Internet, 99% of bloggers don’t make a dime, and the only way the major sites like Drudge or CNN get money is if someone willingly clicks on add or if someone subscribes to premium content on ESPN or something.
