1- Sharks are one of the oldest remaining species from the dinosaur eras! In fact, they existed 200 million years BEFORE the dinosaurs walked the earth! This means that sharks are the ORIGINAL dominate species on earth- over 400 million years old- GOD’s ORIGINAL CHOSEN LIFE-FORM.
2- Although, the MEDIA likes to portray sharks as gigantic monsters, most species are less an a meter in length!
3- The term “shark” also refers to other fish, like rays, skates, and elephant fish.
4- The two LARGEST sharks (whale shark and basking shark) primarliy feed upon plankton and the tiniest of fish!!
5- Sharks balance our planet’s ecosystem. Without sharks, it is very well likely that our environment and lives would be severely damaged.
6- Sharks practice survival of the fittest: they usually feed upon sickly or old fish, thus keeping strong and healthy animals in the gene pool, and help future generations of fish become strong and healthier.
7- A community incorrectly blamed tiger sharks for the decline of a tuna population. After the tiger sharks were killed by this mass hysteria, the tuna population plummeted even FURTHER because the tiger sharks had fed upon the tuna’s PREDATORS! The tuna population was WIPED out because of REMOVING the sharks.
8- Shark research may reveal ways to help our own immune system to help fight diseases!
9- These wondrous beasts have EIGHT SENSES- sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste, instinct, detection of electrical currents, and a lateral line that detects pressure.
10- The female dogfish carries her pups for up to TWO YEARS. This means that fisherman are killing her unborn pups as well.
-Their slow growth, late maturation, long pregnancies, and small litters make sharks the most vulnerable animal in the ocean.
-Incidents of sharks biting humans may be well-publicized by the MEDIA, but they are extremely rare.
Each year, more people are killed by dogs, deer, lightning or falling coconuts – even vending machines – than by sharks. Due to overfishing and shark finning, humans are depleting shark populations around the world at an alarming rate.
SHARK FIN SOUP: 100 MILLION SHARKS KILLED YEARLY. ONLY THE FINS ARE REMOVED. THE STILL-LIVING SHARK IS THROWN BACK IN THE WATER, UNABLE TO DEFEND ITSELF.
